I went to my local city yesterday, popped into CPW & on the spur of the
moment had the firmware upped from R2L001 to R2AA003, the latest they had
access to. I resync'd my contacts & spent ages re-associating pictures,
ringtones then adding back the voice labels & other settings. The damn phone
started bleeping every 2 mins or so! I went to bed somewhat annoyed & rued
my decision. On popped the light bulb - I leap out of bed, grabbed my T39 &
stuck it over-night charge! It wasn't the sodding K700i at all! Ho hum. From
what I heard on the Esato forums though is to avoid this f/w version.

I have had no problems with it whatsoever. Some have had camera problems
because they have tried a kludged update via totalserver. It's better
than the last release IMHO - the address book search/delete was a
    killer.

That's the bit I don't understand - I would expect the C button to erase the
entry - it did & does prompt before doing so. What's wrong with using the
Back key? I'm going to have to reread that thread on Esato. It's early days
but I'm sure that standby time has dropped noticeably. The only difference
I've noticed so far is that the animated connecting to server icon has been
replaced with a box with a progress bar.

Erm.....yes! You didn't have to press the C key. Just an address book
search would delete the entry you arrived at, or rather the number. I
couldn't work out why I had a few blank entries until I read one of the
forums. Kuckily they were still in my Outlook and on my sim.

Dropped? Not here m'lud, slightly better if anything.

Never saw that problem with R2L001. I've reassigned the bottom joystick
shortcut so have to hold a number key down to access my addressbook from the
Home menu. I've heard about the camera problem which seems to reinforce the
suggestion not to use these servers for updating. My camera f/w is still
3.9 - the latest version seems to be 3.1!

Too early to really tell yet. The battery meter may well be slightly
    different with this version.

Obviously not It is also mentioned somewhere on the Esato forum. One gain
over R2L001 is the return of the Autosave to SIM option under the
addressbook's Advanced menu. What I miss is s/w that will backup most
settings as was possible with older SE phones. I would like to be able to
backup picture & tone associations - everything on the phone. The latest f/w
version (R2AE001?) is reported to give faster menu access but doesn't seem
to be officially available yet. The best alternative for my Voda branded
model is probable to upgrade to their latest version which allows one's own
    MP3 ringtones once DRM'd.

    Hi,

the latest f/w version is R2AE033 (R2AE033) to my knowledge.
At least this is the f/w of my phone,
which I upgraded in late december 04.

So forget about those older fw versions;-)

I appear to have got my wires crossed. R2AA003 was the firmware with the
address search delete problem but better battery life. R2AE033 is what
I'm on now and seems to have improved battery life again and cured the
    add/delete problem.
If the update to R2AE033 is done correctly (costing a credit) then there
are no probs. The camera firmware goes to 3.10. If you try to kludge it
without updating the language files then the camera is rendered useless
because the incorrect firmware is fitted (3.9)
R2AE033 best so far IMHO but you are right, it's a pain in the jacksie
having to restore everything manually afterwards.

Phonebackup sort of works, though the proof is in the eating - restoring
that is. How did you get along with that Java browser, Pete?

Bingo! Was just about to give it up as a bad job when I had a look in
the settings for java. Set it to a data connect profile that has the
settings listed for voda _web_ at this page:

    http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html

Make sure you change it from wap to http in the relevant place too.
I like it - thanks for that.

Bingo! Either the firmware upgrade or using my email GPRS web access a/c for
Java apps (probably the latter) has solved the problem. Thanks for your
    helpful confirmation Pete.

It's worth comparing WebView with www.Skweezer.net as they both allow web
access on WAP. WV basically d/ls an entire web page & the phone's screen
acts like a small window that can be moved across & down it. The righthand
button allows shortcuts such as http:\\, www. , com , \ etc but no
bookmarks. Skweezer, on the other hand is a web page that you type in an
address & it gets the desired page, reformats it for portable devices then
retransmits it, stripping out most ads but inserting some of its sponsor's
ones instead. Skweezer is highly controversial for this reason. The ads it
inserts AFAIK are text based, so in theory at least, Skweezer could well be
less expensive & faster to use 'cos ads are often photo based & probably
account for a significant proportion of a page at times. So I have both to
play with for 10 days. My web/WAP access has gone up 10x since getting the
    K700!

My phonebook seems to have remained intact with R2AA003, I don't sync with
Outlook often enough not to notice numbers disappearing!
