We purchased a generic data cable (uses Prolific technology) to
download files from our Sony-Ericsson z500a phone. I succeeded in
installing the hardware and downloaded the latest driver from
Prolific's site. According to the Device Manager on my Windows XP-Home
(SP2) laptop, the device is working normally and has been assigned to
the COM4 port.
I downloaded the Sony-Ericsson File Manager program and connected the
z500a to the cable. When I started up the laptop, the phone icon in
the Windows taskbar flashes to indicate the phone is connected to the
PC. However, whenever I opened the Sony-Ericsson File Manager and
tried clicking on an icon to view a file in the phone's memory, I lost
the connection (Windows displays a message box indicating an unknown
error). I then had to re-boot the PC to restore the connection.
I'm getting very frustrated, especially now that I have come
tantalizingly close to accessing the phone's memory. I did verify that
the S-E File Manager is also configured for COM4. Should I change any
of the default Port settings, or would I just be better off returning
this cable and getting an S-E cable?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Help with USB-Serial Data Cable for S-E z500a
are there any other devices trying access the same port and hijacking the
port so to speak
check device manager to see if there a conflict reinstall driver from there
tell the install wizard
where you put the driver worth a try
