Can someone confirm that I'm not missing an obvious shortcut to SMS someone
    in your phone book?

I have the Text Messaging menu set up as my first shortcut, so when I move
the joystick left I get the menu which begins with Write New

So from there on it is

[Type the SMS] > Continue > Look Up > Phonebook > First letter (optional) >
OK > [Select Contact] > [Select Number] > Send

I think that's 8 clicks to send an SMS to someone in the phonebook!

I thought that perhaps you could find a contact in the phone book, click
More and there would be an entry to send that person a text, but there
    isn't.

    Thanks.

Yes it really is that bad, unbelieveable isn't it? Still a lot to learn
from Nokia as regards user interfaces but SE are starting to get nearer -
just very slowly. I tend to leave a message from my most common text
contacts in the inbox and then just reply, which makes it a bit quicker

Or you could create a group with just one contact in for those you text on a
    regular basis

Strangely enough I can't find anything in the manual that says how to set up
a group of recipients for an SMS. Nor can I find the option on the phone!

Don't look for a group for sms, but just a general (phonebook) group. When
you send an sms, you can select such a group.

Totally agree with it being long-winded!!!

And unless I'm missing something obvious, it doesn't tell you how many
characters you have remaining, so you can ensure the message fits in 1
single text (ie max 160 characters)

Anoying when you end up sending (& paying for) 2 texts for the sake of 1or 2
    digits

That's odd because mine beeps and flashes up a warning sying "SMS 2" etc
when you write over 160 chars.

Yeah - sorry about that - didn't notice on mine - just saw it didn't 'count
down and assumed the worst. But...

....I downloaded a few SMS poly tones - including the intel 'tune' which I
thought would be a bit more distinctive than the SE ones. Only trouble is I
now find you can't change the default options!!!

I'm more than happy to be proved wrong on this one as well if anyone can
    help!!

You can't. Which site did you get the poly tones from? Did they have a "US
    style" phone ringer poly sound?

Thanks. Only ring tones as you can't change the SMS tone on the T610 (well,
you can't use a downloaded tone).

Mine too. But since my SMS messages are less than a penny each, I don't
    really care.
