hi there,
I've got a sony ericsson t68i and i'm considering purchasing either
the ipaq 1940 (pocket pc 2003) or the palm tungsten t2 (palm 5.2.1). I
would like recommendations on which usb bluetooth adapter would be
compatible with all these products (i.e. SE T68i and Ipaq 1940/Palm
T2). The models available in my region are:
1. Billionton USBBTC1A (100m/Class 1)
2. Belkin F8T001 (100m)
3. MSI MS-6967 Bluetooth Transceiving Key
Any advice would be appreciated as i've read many posts about
compatibility issues with bluetooth adapters in general.
best,
vin

The issues are not with the adapters per se, but with software. Some
companies do not invest in upgrades, testing and release of updated
software, and users are left behind.
From your list I'd suggest Belkin. If this is not your choice, try TDK or
Bluetake.

Agreed. I use the MSI-6967, which hardware-wise I'm quite happy with, but
I'm dissapointed MSI still haven't sorted the latest widcomm drivers out
(they're still at 1.3.2.7). Go with one of the manufacturers that have a rep
for getting the drivers sorted promptly. At lot of people seem to be very
happy with the TDK devices.

MSI works without problems with both T68i and my 5450. However,
I only use the basic stuff (GPRS and phonebook sync with the phone,
ActiveSync with the iPAQ). I think I had PAN running in a test setup,
but it was not trivial to set up and I had to upgrade the software
that came with the MSI to get any usable results.
The real range is about 5-7 m indoors (thin walls). I did not have
the possibility to use a "100 m" device, but I'd say that to get
any benefits of it all your devices have to support it and AFAIK
neither T68i nor the iPAQ is such a device.

Well, my opinion is that BT is an ugly mess of protocols that is
a pain to implement and test and that it results in a poor software
support and unbelievable lack of good documentation and HOW-TOs :-(
Palm newsgroup crosspost dropped as I have no data here.

Stano, I know we can't save the world (or Bluetooth or anything else for
that matter), but we're trying to put as much information as possible in
form of guides in our site. If you can help or suggest something please do!

Yes, I know your site and appreciate it - I found valuable information
there several times, many thanks!
However, I feel this should be the responsibility of the vendors and I find
the situation where everyone relies on enthusiasts to provide free support
for their non-free stuff very unfortunate :-(

thanks for the input MF. Are you sure the belkin supports the Ipaq
1940 as it uses the Pocket PC 2003 OS?

Re: Help in choosing the right USB Bluetooth adapter for T68i and Ipaq 1940/Palm T2
Mauricio,
Belkin is NOT the solution, they are still at version 1.2.2.16 of the
drivers! I agree that their hardware is usually top-notch, but it seems
their software updates lag way behind. You might get faster updates with
the Billonton.
I have the Belkin, and even though it works, it is a pain 'patching' the
latest Widcomm drivers from 'someone else' (Dell was the latest) and working
at it unsupported.
So, buyer beware with Belkin.

Thanks... And you're right to the point. Two of the few vendors doing some
stuff like this is TDK (www.no2wires.com) and Bluetake (www.bluetake.com)
They both have guides on their sistes (and no2wires actually points to
Geekzone for some of the guides).

Yes, their site is not updated, but I got a word from them that 1.4 is
coming out soon - if as soon as TDK's promissed I don't know.
But in terms of support I alwasy had a good response from them.

spyro,
i was thinking about the billionton device myself, but a quick glance at
their forums revealed a very interesting fact: they have acknowledged that
their current software/drivers don't support Pocket PC 2003 pdas.
is this is a fact, or was the forum poster mistaken? otherwise i'd have to
stick with MF's suggestion of picking up a belkin bud.
vin
ps: which version of the widcomm drivers support the pocket pc 2003 os?

Vin,
since I don't have a Billionton I never dug into any issues they are having,
sorry. I am using my Belkin with a Palm Tungsten|T and a SE T68i, so I
can't help you on the PocketPC OS question either.

Re: Help in choosing the right USB Bluetooth adapter for T68i and Ipaq 1940/Palm T2
Vin,
It sounds the post you refered to is mixing BT USB Dongles and CF card
compatibility. As far as I know there are no issues with PPC 2003 with
respect to Bluetooth. As long as the USB dongle and the PPC 2003 device
support Bluetooth 1.1 specs you should have no problems. I am using a Belkin
with a T68i and it works fine. I have not tested with a PPC but I have
connected my T68i with an HP2210 which runs PPC 2003.
My recommendation is NOT to go with the 100m devices simply because there
will be little benefit to using it with the SE T68i or a PDA. Most
phone/PDAs are only rated for a range of 10m. I will also caution you on the
Belkin because of a) slow to provide updated Widcomm drivers and b) the
F8T001 cannot support BT Headset Audio, at least according to Belkin. If you
want to use a Belkin device go with the F8T003 which is the 10m device and
according to Belkin can support BT Audio.
Good luck in your search
TC
