Pros and cons of T68i vs T610

HI,

just about to buy a new phone and I'd more or less decided on a
T610 when I saw that I could get a new T68i for less than half the
price.

At the end of the day I just need something to make phone calls and
hook up via bluetooth to my PDA (which will do all the stuff that a
smartphone would, but better) with a decent onboard phonebook.

It seems to me that the T68i will do all I want - it has small form
factor and good battery life, even though it doesn't have all the
bells and whistles of the T610.

Is there a compelling usability-related reason why I should go for
a T610 instead - say issues of reception, battery life, texting speed,
fewer bugs etc. or can I save the dosh and buy a T68i instead,
spending the difference on a nice BT headset?

Not really tbh. However, you can get the T610 for free on the Orange HSD
tarriff (£10/mth) at the Link now, which means £120 for the year. Can you
get the T68 cheaper?

90 quid (200CHF) vs 180 quid (400CHF) for the T610. The phones are
contract free (ie full retail versions).

I could pick up a decent bluetooth headset for about 150-200CHF so
I could have the T68i please BT headset for the cost of a T610.

The problem is that I'm not currently in the UK making it a hassle
to take out new UK contracts and I don't want to bother with things
like flashing the phones if I can help it. I can get the T68i brand
new locally for 90 quid and the T610 at 180 quid. That's the
unlocked, retail pack - no contracts to take out, no customisation, no
need to reflash.

There are local contract+phone deals which aren't as good as the UK
ones and which would tie me in for longer than I feel comfortable with
as they have heavy penalties for premature contract termination which
I could well be doing.


Alternatively I've thought about cancelling a UK contract which I
still hold and taking the PAC code to port the number to O2 who I
believe are giving away free T610s with contract (and I believe these
phones aren't SIM locked) at certain retailers.

I'd have to do this on my next trip to the UK and that might not
happen until the end of the year so it's not a convenient option
considering my current phone is on it's last legs and let me down
badly on a recent trip.

Based on your assessment of what you need it for go for the T68i - it's
still a great handset.

It is also a better-made handset. If you shop carefully, it is cheap
or free. I really can't see a reason to buy the T68i instead, even if
it does save you a few quid.

I've got both and I have to say that of the two the T68i is probably
better for what you want. It certainly gives you more control over the
functions in your phone than the T610. The T61o is flashier and the
screen and sounds are a lot better, but its not really a data phone.

Hi,

I have used both phones for a while. The T610 wins hands down for me
and is a far better phone. Main problem with T68i was poor reception
which I got totally sick of and sold it because of it. Also if you
text a lot the T610 is better as its quicker and doesnot lock up.

GPRS is faster on T610
(4+1 slots)

T68: (3+1)

T68i sucks. Although the feature set is similar, the UI on the T68i is
dreadful. The T610 is just more pleasant to use. It doesn't feel as
cheap (especially the joystick), and GPRS is vastly improved by a
slicker UI and larger display area. Both still suffer from a moronic
method of organising speed-dials, but for that cost differential,
there's no argument. It is hard to quantify because of the similarity on
the tech specs, but think Windows 3.1 versus Mac OS X (well Windows XP
at least!) in terms of the usability.
