Hi all
Im considering replacing my iPAQ / Bluetooth phone combo and a P800 is
looking pretty tempting..
From what i can gather i can make notes on the P800 that go into Outlook in
the same way as an iPAQ and all the contacts, callendar and tasks also sync
in a similar manner to an iPAQ...
Could someone comment about a few concerns i have in relation to the swap
over...
I use a few small excell spread sheets on the iPAQ, it doesnt need to be
identical but something similar that can view and edit simple spreadsheets
is essential, is this included or available as an option ?
I use it to browse a few low bandwidth web pages like the BBC's low Graphics
News Page, is this sort of browsing ok and if not is the Opera browser a
good alternative ? and is it free ?
E-Mail, mainly used to pick up and reply to work e-mail either by pop3 or
imap, is this useable ? or crippled ? The Nokia 9210 was ok for this - does
it compare ?
Can hotmail be picked up via the e-mail app, either built in or with a patch
?
MSN messenger is essential to me, its more usefull than SMS and the main
benefit of the Pocket PC Platform to me, is it available on the P800 - built
in of via other software, if so what ...
Is there a simple telnet client available for the P800, its always a good
backup system in case of problems.
only a couple more ;-)
Can the phone be turned off and still use the pda functions ?
and finally! How does it fare with only 16mb of memory and a 16mb store
card, do you need to keep closing apps down due to low memory.
Oh, 1 more - sorry.
I used to have a Nokia 9210i (sold due to lack of GPRS support if you ask)
and it was ok, also based on a symbian operating system, but it was always
crashing and unreliable - no where near as stable as my older psion revo, 5
series... type devices. How does the P800 fare amongst this company ?
Many many thanks to anyone replyiug, im tempted by a £149 offer for a p800
on O2, on a low tarriff for once, but not sure whether to make the jump just
yet. My iPAQ is slightly problematic having just lost the power button and
it might be the time to jump.
Thanks in advance

Yep.

View, but no edit.

Opera is free. And very good too - much better than the built-in browser.

It works brilliantly - especially over GPRS. You have to find an SMTP server
that you can log into without being logged on as the service provider (I use
Vizzavi), but other than that it is superb.

Dunno. I don't like Hotmail, so it hasn't been an issue for me. You probably
just need the servier details... Maybe?

I saw another posting that mentioned this being possible - and the software
was free. Try a net search.

Dunno.

Yes, it's called 'Flight Mode'.

No problem with the apps, but if you want to hold graphics/MP3s, etc. you'll
thank yourself for getting a 128MB card. I'm told that 128MB is the lrgest
we're going to get, which is a real set-back in my opinion and SE should be
kicked for that one!!! Why do Sony have to push their under-sized,
overpriced crappy 'stick' at us when I can get a 128MB SD card for 11
quid!???!?!?!?!!! Rant over...

I've had 2 crashes in the 2 months I've owned mine (when I was doing somw
stupid things, I admit, like trying to use the phone while it was
transferring files!), but nothing a quick battery pull didn't cure. I've had
this on all phones anyway. The P800 doesn't seem any worse in this respect.

I did - definitely a better way of working IMO.

Most networks actually have their own, for example, Orange is
smtp.orange.net.

PuTTY is available for the P800.

Unless you can get a very cheap deal on the P800, you might want to wait
for the P900, which is out "soon".

Re: P800 advice, as an iPAQ replacement
Hey guys
Thanks both for the answers. sadly a spreadsheet with update is sort of
essential, and looking at whats available thats the main problem
I work for an I T department, we have servers that work properly with
mobiles so im fine with all that, i think i will see if i can find a good
spreadsheet app, if i do i will go with the 800.
Much as im tempted by the 900, the only improvements over the 800 seem to be
a slightly different software revision, and a different body. Are there any
new features im missing ?
The 900 looks nicer sure, but im guessing its going to be expensive, at
least £299 with a big data contract, where as i can get an 800 for about
£149 with any contract I like

I reached a similar point in my deliberation, but thought that maybe I was
throwing the baby out with the bathwater if that was the only thing I was
missing. I do miss a spreadsheet application (what were SE thinking when
they missed that feature out of a PDA!?), but I can work around it most of
the time.
Not exactly a spreadsheet replacement, but there is an expenses totter that
will do simple maths tables for you - Handy Expense.
If you do find a P800 spreadsheet application - let me know!!!

Erm where can you get a 128Mb SD card for 11 quid? Best price I've see
is about 30.

A spreadsheet for the P800
http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applicatio...q=6&fldAuto=53
Opera browser, yes it's free
And it can be used to access Hotmail
http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applicatio...Auto=420&faq=6
MSN messenger (and ICQ, Yahoo and AOL)
http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applicatio...dAuto=60&faq=6
PuTTy a ssh and telnet client (there are others)
Yes the Phone can be put into "flight mode" and act as a PDA only
16Mb onboard, and up to 128Mb via memory stick.
Memory management seems pretty good.
With latest firmware, it's very stable.

Purchase from http://www.netrovia.com/p800 (from the inside the program
select Qcalc > About and then register).

Re: P800 advice, as an iPAQ replacement
QuickCalc looks OK, but does it load/save Excel formats?

Re: P800 advice, as an iPAQ replacement
Hey all
Thanks for all the usefull information. The only negative to me would seem
to be the lack of inbuilt spreadsheet and possible problem of getting one,
having to pay extra for it too - grrrr
Anyway, looks like it does everything else i "really" need to do, and i
think I can get one on a lowish contract on O2 or Vodafone for about £100.
I realise the P900 is imminent now and probably nicer, but the software
seems the same, or little better for my needs, and i dread to see the price
so looks like P800 ownership is happening for me today - ok, and broadband
is enabled in my area today too :-)))))))))))))
Thanks, brace yourselves for all the stupid "How do I ...." questions im
soon to be asking..

I want to know how much it is *before* I bother downloading and
installing it. I can't see a price on the website, hence my question.

http://www.netrovia.com/p800/qcalc.html (or the above link and then clink on
from that page). The price is $23.50 (£14.95). I understood the question
which is why I provided the link to the developers website. I only included
the information about the application menu's if other people wanted to know
where I found the URL details in the first place.

Thank you. I did visit the page you'd linked but couldn't find a
price. I tried clicking on various bits of the screen (the Qcalc log,
screenprint, etc.) but could see another link. I've found it now
though.

I must admit I tried to go to the website myself before you posted but
only went to their homepage but it started to download some flash or
something so I gave up.
