Thank you John for your help. You were right, when I turned off the firewall
the PC 'found' the P900, however it does not seem clear at all how to
configure the firewall so that it will allow the P900 through. It asks for
an IP address, and little else. Does the P900 have an IP address, or can one
be assigned? Is there some other way to tell the firewall that the P900 is
    OK?

    Regards, and thanks again,

    Which firewall?

I have no problems with Kerio personal (free) when I used to use that
for my p800, no problems now with Zonealarm (free for personal use)
with the v 2.01 of the sync software (for p900 and p800).

Perhaps switch to one of these free solutions?

    all the best,
    Ian

The P800 software (and I am assuming the P900 software works in the same
way) uses the internal IP address 127.0.0.1
This is a special IP address which is used internally within your PC (I
think I have got that bit right; I'm sure someone with a greater knowledge
of networking will correct me if it is wrong). I use Zonealarm and when I
first ran the PC suite several alarms popped up on the screen. I just
selected the option to always allow this program to connect and then clicked
yes. This allows sync and backup every time without out a problem. If your
firewall keeps a list of the programs which have tried to access the network
then look in there and see if there is an option to change the settings to
    allow them to connect. The programs involved are;

    ArchiveManagerServer.exe
    BroadcastProxy.exe
    epmworker.exe
    CapMan.exe
    DXP SyncML.exe
    EPOCInst.exe
    mRouterRuntime.exe
    audevicemgr.exe
    SCRFS.exe

All of the above are listed in Zonealarm as programs which have needed to
gain permission from the firewall to work properly. They all live in
c:\program files\sony ericsson\mobile\ or in sub folders within this
location (assuming you have installed the software to it's default
    location).

I hope all of this is some help to you.
