Can anyone tell me if an external antenna will help my reception in my car
on my AT&T v60i GSM phone? I see that many aftermarket manufacturers market
inexpensive antennas that stick to the roof with a magnet. Are these just
worthless junk or do they work? If it works could I also use one in my
house?

If they're properly made they work well. Try Wilson electronics for
good but not too expensive.
http://www.wpsantennas.com/ is one of their dealers.
Look at the specs of the particular antenna you're interested in. The
"db gain" number is the important one (or ones for a dual band
antenna). The higher the number the better. Of course the higher the
number the higher the price for the same type (magnet, mirror mount,
etc.) antenna.

Sure. You just need something about 6 inches (or larger) in diameter
that a magnet will stick to. An inverted pie tin works. (There has
to be metal under the antenna for it to work properly, unless it's
designed to mount on a fiberglass body.)
