Little old lady needs help - V600/laptop/Bluetooth

I hope some of you nice guys will help me - I tried googling for specific
instructions but am somewhat confused.

I have a V600
I have a Toshiba laptop
I have a Bluetooth Dongle that comes with Blue Manager 3.1 (no instuctions)
I only have free T-Zones
I figured out how to pair my laptop/phone
My software gives me the option to do a Bluetooth dialup connection or a
Bluetooth GPRS connection
I have tried connecting both ways using either *99# or *99***1# but I get a
message that there was no dial tone
I read in an old post by Matthew Stevens that you can use your free WAP to
access the internet from your PC with this command
at+cgdcont+1, "IP", "wap.voicestream.com" but I'm not sure what this means.
Do I have to setup my Bluetooth phone as a modem - is that the step I am
missing? In other words I just can't install the dongle and do a dialup?
If someone could point me to a link I would really appreciate it. I tried
Howard Forums on the V600 but all they talked about is when or who or why
they wanted a V600. Any help deeply appreciated. DonnaB

what I understand.

From what I've experienced before, the GPRS connection isn't supposed
to have a dial tone. I've used this "GPRS connection" on my V66 before,
and also my new V300, and it works for both of them. I'm not familiar
with the software you're using so I can't tell you exactly what you're
supposed to see if you installed it properly or not. Try looking at the
bottom right hand corner of your laptop and click on the "double
monitor" icon. That should tell you if you are receiving and sending
packets, which means that you have an internet connection if you are, in
fact, receiving and sending data. The only thing you need to do after
that is open a browser and you're ready to surf the net.

What errors are you getting when installing the GPRS connection?

Well, first off, it looks like that (wap.voicestream.com) is an old
(very old) connection when Voicestream used to be a company. That
company is now under T-Mobile and is no more. It's possible that it
doesn't exist anymore.

If I were you, I'd try installing the GPRS connection and go from there.
Once you have that installed, you should be able to just open a
browser and start surfing the net.

If I were you, I'd try installing the GPRS connection and go from there.
Once you have that installed, you should be able to just open a
browser and start surfing the net.

Thanks for responding to my post. I do have the free T-Zones that come with
the phone/service so I first experimented with the phone and found out I
could go to an http site (3Gupload) and downloaded some ringtones. I had
also read you could access the internet from a laptop without subscribing
to T-Zones. So, technically, there is indeed free T-Zones. The step I left
out was setting up my Bluetooth phone as a modem and using that string
at+cgdcont+1, "IP", "wap.voicestream.com I then connected fine using *99#.
It's slow and all I really want is to reply to email from my computer when I
am on the road. When I called T-Mo for help the tech guy said I had to pay
$19.99 to do this - guess not! When using Outlook Express, however I can
receive but not send but I think that is because of the way Road Runner is
set up. But I can still reply to email via the internet. DonnaB

Hi Donna!

I had a similar issue with my v600. I managed to get a bluetooth
conection between phone and laptop. I had the Motorola Phone Tools and
they worked fine for connecting between laptop and phone for tasks such
as tranferring photos or address books but I couldn't get the GPRS
connection to work. The error message was similar to yours.

My phone company (Orange UK) had an exceedingly helpful data support
team.

Basically I had to type in the equivalent AT command to the one you have
mentioned (but referring to Orange) in the Bluetooth data modem settings
within Windows XP (but presumably the same with other flavours of
windows).

I also had to change the dial string to *99# from the the *99***1# that
I had been using.

Suddenly everything came out just fine.

That is probably because OE commonly retrieves using POP3 and sends using
SMTP. You can access many POP3 servers from other ISP accounts, but SMTP
access is usually blocked. You would have to configure an OE account to
send via a T-Mobile SMTP server, if that is possible. The T-Mobile support
site suggests you have to use MMS to send from the phone.
