The ST7868W can send text messages if it has software version 7654 or
later. Go to Main Menu, phone options, phone info and scroll down to
find your software version. A dealer should be able to upgrade the
software, but since the phone is over 2 years old, you may have to
hunt around for someone who can do it.

Very nicely, thank you. Get the firmware upgraded. You can get this done
at most VZW repair depots.
Then go into the Messaging area, go to Send a Message, select a member from
your calling list or VZ wireless member, and send your message. The manual
should help you out.

Re: messaging on a Startac 7868W
does it matter that I'm on Alltel, as I can't find a dealer here that can or
will upgrade mine for me.
Is there a list of dealers that I can check and see which ones can do the
upgrade or is it hit or miss.
Thanks, Defiant

I activated a used StarTAC at my local Alltel store in May. They were
no longer capable of updating StarTAC software then. That store had
updated another phone of mine in July of last year. Luckily, all of
my StarTAC's, in use or spare, now have 7654 or 7659 so they are all
capable of 2-way text.
I'd suggest you sign on to http://alltel.howardforums.com and ask if
anyone there knows who can still do it. Many Alltel agents monitor
that forum. You may have more luck with the independent agents than
with the company stores.
I'm also sure that Motorola's repair center in Dallas could do it, but
they charge $75 flat rate per phone for all repairs.

Unless you need other repairs done, that's not practical. They do
give you a new housing and antenna, though. The phone looks brand new
when you get it back.
Another repair center is ViaStar:
https://www.viastartech.com/repair/intro.aspx
or call: 877-235-5300
If you can't find a local source and don't need any other repairs, I'd
call ViaStar and see if they could do the software upgrade and what
the turnaround time would be.

Apologies, I thought I was in the verizon forum. I subscribe to both. Mea
culpa.
Hope you can get your software flashed.
