I recently bought a second hand Motorola A835 (locked to 3) without sim
card, i've just bought a new 3 pay sim card and put it into the phone. When
the phone is switched on it says " Enter Unlock Code".
Is this an unlock code for the sim card or is it to unlock the phone keypad?
As i just bought both i don't know. I daren't just make up numbers or it
    might lock permanently.
    Any help / advice appreciated.

Sounds like the SIM card lock. The feature must have been left on. The
default is "0000", but 3 strikes and you're out. Then you'd have to enter
PUK codes, etc. 3 Customer Services are on (UK) 0870 7330 333.
