    I've got an old Timeport 280e that has a lot of phone numbers on it that
    I'd like to get into my computer. I have a USB cable and a Starfish (now
    defunct I think) Truesync CD. I've loaded up the CD, plugged the phone
    into a USB socket, gone through the 'New Hardware' wizard, which tells
    me it's found a Motorola 280 and that the drivers are installed but may
    not work! What does that mean exactly? Why won't they work I wonder?

    So I'm now trying to sync the phone. But of course it won't sync. The
    program gets as far as 'Preparing for synchronization' but then I get
    the error message E0003 'Truesync could not communicate with the phone'.

    Can anyone help? Any suggestions, ideas etc?

    Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't work.

    I've now uninstalled and reinstalled all the Truesync software and tried
    the suggestion above after the reinstallation. When I reinstalled, the
    'Found New Hardware' wizard did not show up and I'm not convinced the
    computer can see the phone. I've looked in 'Device Manager' and it's not
    on any of the Com ports or the USB ports. I've unplugged, replugged,
    turned phone on and off whilst plugged and unplugged.

    There's no hint anywhere that the phone and the computer are connected.
    When I did all this the first time around at least the 'Found New
    Hardware' wizard appeared so that suggests there's no fault in the cable
    or the USB port or any other hardware. This must be a software problem.

    BTW I'm using WIN2000.

    What could I try next? Anyone any ideas? Another reinstall?

    It may be that you don't see the New Hardware Found because it's still in
    Device Mgr and therefore not new.
    Try another reinstall before giving up. Before you do, uninstall the
    software and then delete any references to a Motorola modem in the com ports
    and USB sections of Device Mgr.
    After all is cleaned up, install the software first, plug the cable into
    the phone, turn the phone on and then - and only then - plug the cable into
    the PC.
    At that point the PC should detect it and use the software's drivers to
    install it.

    And in Phone and Modem Options (or whatever it was called in 2k) in
    Control Panel.

    It worked Bruce. Great success! How amazing. It was all down to the
    order in which things were done.

    1. Install Truesync software FIRST. Do NOT follow instructions from the
    installer wizard that starts when the CD is inserted in the drive.
    2. Turn on phone and plug-in using USB port. 'New Hardware' wizard MIGHT
    start, but it might not.
    3. Install USB driver from installer wizard.
    4. Start Truesync program, which, on first usage, starts a wizard -
    follow it through.
    5. The phone should then synchronize.
    6. Sync phone book with Outlook (or whatever) but be careful, follow
    Truesync's backup procedure first in case things go wrong. And, on the
    first synchronization, remember to dump contents of phone book into
    Outlook rather than dump contents of Outlook into phone, otherwise all
    phonebook's contents (in phone) will be changed and you may loose loads
    of data!

    The irony of all this, for me, is that I'll only need to do it once
    because I'm trying to get all my phone numbers off my Motorola Timeport
    280e and onto another phone (a Sony Ericsson T610). And, at last, I've
    managed it.
