While I really like my V600, I am too dumb to figure out how to switch
it from RING to VIBRATE in one button push. The only way it appears you
can "go silent" is to repeatedly push the "Lower Volume" button
(hearing a bunch of annoying rings of decreasing volume) until you
finally get to VIBRATE. This is kind of silly if you find yourself in a
quiet situation where you really, really want to shut off the sound
immediately. What is the correct procedure?

Does turning off the Service Tone setting silence the beeping?

With the phone closed, press the Volume Button (up or down) and the current
setting will be displayed in the front window. Then, use the Smart Button to
    scroll through the options.

Poor engineering IMHO. Contrast with Sony Ericsson, where a simple press and
hold of the "C" key toggles silent mode on and off.

WHile the V600 is ringing, press the volume button once (up or down, doesn't
matter). This silences it instantly, though it still "rings" silently until
youy answer, or it goes to voicemail.
I set mine to vibrate first, so when I first feel the vibrate, I can silence
the sound before it even makes a sound if I want to.
