I recently bought a Motorola V3 from Carphone Warehouse. The supplied
software is way out of date and does not recognise the phone. I've tried
updating it, but after several tries (the server seems to keep crashing)
I completed a 10MB download only to have it declare"Cannot decompress
file". This has happened several times - I've wasted hours on downloads.
Is there any other way of getting the program to work? Or is anything
else available, not too expensive? All I want is to be able to
import/export numbers and back up files.

Sometimes it helps on these big downloads to get your computer down to
fighting trim first. Turn off everything that is running in the
background. Turn off any firewall, anti-virus, spyware programs as
well as anything else that isn't absolutely necessary to the operation
of your computer. There shouldn't be much left on your taskbar but
the speaker. You especially don't want anything else accessing the
internet while you are downloading, like an automatic mail check. Of
course you would only do this on a site that you trust.

Data Pilot is good but costs $40. You can buy MPT on ebay for about $10.
If you have an older version of MPT it should update automatically when
you run it but it sounds like there is a problem with you particular
computer. What is the OS and how much RAM do you have?

    Thanks for the suggestions.
After updating the update application, I managed to download the
first update file early in the morning when the PT server is
quieter. Unfortunately, the only result I get is "Cannot decompress
    file".
    I don't see how my system - W2k, 512Mb, 80Gb - can affect this;
certainly no other installer or decompressor has had problems.

This whole deal has made me distrust PhoneTools, so I'm looking for
an alternative. Is Data Pilot the only one? Is it any good?

Just last night, I upgraded my Mobile Phone Tools from 3.19 to 3.23. No
problem at all with the live update. Don't be distrustful of the Phone
Tools, be distrustful of some aspect of the setup of your pc. Don't know
where to point a finger at, but it doesn't appear to be the Mobile Phone
    Tools.

Please BE distrusful of the MPT. It IS a piece of crap type of
software. Try to find other threads dealing with this topic or BVRP
support forum and you will understand why. I never had so much problem
with any software before and the installation is only the beginning.
Personally I had no problems installing and updating it but
synchronizing mu Outlook with phone resulted in corrupted phonebook in
my Outlook. I spent a couple of weeks struggling to set it up properly,
but it is was not worth the time I wasted. It is very likely that I
will try to switch to Data Pilot anyway if they do not fix the worst
    bugs soon.

I've just completed the same process successfully but twice received
the same "Cannot decompress...." warning, with the v3.20 and v3.21
upgrades. Each time I restarted the computer (without restarting MPT)
and on reconnecting my V3 and then opening MPT was offered the next
update. AFAICT the files copied successfully but the installer didn't
recognise the fact, as the version number shown during the update(s)
was the one that allegedly wasn't decompressed during the previous
one. Confusing, to say the least!

Anyhow, the outcome is that MPT is now at v3.23 and running fine.

While it's possible that the OP may have a hardware problem
contributing to the issue, my experience suggests that the LiveUpdate
process may also be less than robust.

Agreed, MPT is not the brightest program on the block.
And why there is not a better program out there with the huge demand is
    a puzzle to me.

I have reduced the quirkiness of my MPT 3.23 by clearing the deck.
The computer is able to handle multiple programs as it has more than
adequate resources and OS but MPT does not play with others well.

I disable all firewall and anti-virus programs, close all internet and
fax connections on my computer BEFORE starting MPT.
Next I do not connect the cell phone until the profile prompt appears.
After connecting the phone, then I select the profile and MPT proceeds.

This avoids most problems, making MPT about 70% reliable.
    Otherwise it is <50% reliable.

I think to go beyond 70% reliability requires a small animal sacrifice.

MPT works fine here on IBM ThinkPads, 600X and T30, under Windows XP Pro.
