Here's another question for the group. Will a Motorola V3 RAZR phone work
with the AT&T Wireless network? If so, do I just need to get one of the ones
    that is "unlocked" from somewhere?

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

The Razr v3 (is sold in the US) comes locked to Cingular which now
includes the former ATTWS network. There is no more ATTWS since it was
integrated with Cingular. You will however, need it unlocked to use
with TMobile or any other GSM carrier.

The V3 is distributed exclusively in the US by Cingular.
Those phones are subsidy-locked to Cingular SIMs.

If you had an active AT&T SIM and wanted to put it in the V3, then yes,
it would need to be unlocked in order to use.

If you don't have an active AT&T SIM, the question is irrelevant as
Cingular is not activating new AT&T accounts, and the only SIM you would
get from Cingular is one that would work on a locked V3.

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

Okay, so I could then take the SIM chip from my Motorola V180 phone and put
it in a V3 RAZR phone, and it would work? All I would have to do is purchase
a RAZR phone unlocked? Does this mean then, that I could use a RAZR, since I
am already an ATTWS/Cingular customer? I know that when I had to get my
phone replaced under there warranty plan, I just put the SIM chip in the new
phone and it worked immediately. Same concept here then basically?

Yes, except that there is no such thing as an ATTWS/Cingular SIM.
There is an ATTWS SIM, and there is a Cingular SIM.
A Cingular-locked RAZR will accept a Cingular SIM but **NOT** an ATTWS
    SIM.

So, yes ... the RAZR would have to be unlocked, and Cingular does not sell
    them that way.

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

If that's the case (which it wasn't for my partner's wife) why not just
ask Cingular for a new SIM? Since the two companies are now one I'd
think they'd be happy to give you a new SIM when you buy a phone.

alright heres the story, the V3 is sold in the united states locked to cingular only, meaning that only cingular specific SIM cards would work on the phone, not other sim period. any other SIM card, T-Mobile and ATTWS for example, will only work in the V3 if it is unlocked. now to settle the confusion, if you have a CINGULAR SIM, then you have a CINGULAR rate plan and are there for an ORANGE CINGULAR customer, if you have an ATTWS SIM, then it means you have an ATTWS rate plan and are a BLUE CINGULAR customer. Just because they merged doesn't mean that their phones and sims are interswappable. in conclusion, if you want to put an ATTWS sim in a v3, make sure it is unlocked since there are no v3's for sale that are non-CINGULAR specific. hope that helps, whew

To do that, you must transition from an ATTWS account to a Cingular
account ... sign a contract, and pay an upgrade fee.

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

Okay, so that makes perfect sense, and it sounds great. So now all I have to
do is purchase one of the V3 RAZR phones that are unlocked, from a seller on
Ebay. Sounds great all over. I get to use a new RAZR phone, and keep all of
my benefits that I got with my old AT&T plan. Does that about sum it up?

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

Yes, that's exactly what I did except I use T-Mobile. If you're an
experienced ebayer you already know to check the sellers feedback rating
before buying. There are lots of new unlocked v3's there. You'll pay
more for black but I like the silver better myself. If you buy a
foreign version, like from Hong Kong, you typically get more accessories
and built in ringtones and games. Cingular models (what I have) are
pretty basic. That's OK with me though as I rather fill the memory with
ringers and games that I want.

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

Well, I feel better now that I'm not the only one wanting to do this, plus
it makes me feel a lot better knowing you did it, and it worked without a
hitch. I like the silver one as well, and I agree with you on the ringtones
and games too. I have the software for my V180 phone, and I'm pretty sure it
will work for the RAZR as well. How are you able to transfer the java games
into your phone from your computer? I haven't been able to figure that one
out yet. Also, did you just bid on one on Ebay, or did you get your phone
somewhere else. I was thinking of getting it maybe from somewhere in Asia.
Is it safe and the same thing? I guess it's the same old thing, "Let the
    Buyer Beware."

    Re: V3 RAZR Question

Buying from HK is no problem - just check the FB to see that it's a good
dealer. I bought my v600 that way and was delighted with the service.
The phone arrived in 3 days and worked right out of the box (with my
SIM). The v3 I also bought on ebay from a USA source so got the Cingular
package (unlocked). That worked fine too although the HK version might
have had a few extra goodies. I'm very pleased with it though. It's the
first phone I've had that I really enjoy using (and I've had a cell
    phone since 1984).
There are two ways to upload java games tot he v3. USB cable, using
other programs and requiring creation of .jad files (complicated method)
OR use Bluetooth to just drag and drop. See my blogsite for details:
