Despite my best efforts, I cannot find any way to configure my new V171
mobile phone so that I can turn it on and off with out it playing a tune
to tell me, and everyone withing earshot, that I've done it.

Is it possible to disable this irritating 'feature' other than by means
    of a large brick?

    Sylvia.

My only experience with this issue is with my V551, but my use typically
finds my handset in vibrate-only mode, so the turn on/off sonata stays
muted. This also results in my continuing to enjoy myself when a ring
tone is heard - I know it's not mine so I'm not grabbing at myself while
    everyone else is.

Thanks. I've since been advised by Motorola that the only way to silence
the turn off/on is to set the phone into silent mode before turning it
off, and that back into ring mode after turning it back on.

Has it ever occured to these manfucturers that some people just want a
phone - not a fashion accessory - not a portable music device - just a
    phone?

    Sylvia.

I'm sure it has, but plainess doesn't up-sell. Look at the adverts, I
haven't seen a single one touts the product's ability to outperform the
competition as a cell phone. Download musical ring tones! Download
pictures! Download video! Cell TV! Well, woopteedoo!! All intended
to run your usage costs up like a flag on a pole. Some phones even come
crippled by the provider forcing you to use your minutes/kb to transfer
all that drivel. I like the high (and higher) speed data stuff, there's
practicality in that - the rest of that crap is just fluff & puff
    attempts to impress someone else.
