I cannot imagine the carriers putting ANY phone on their system they don't
have complete remote control of without your knowledge. Can you?

You, then, are implying that VZW *can* override the Emergency Only setting
for GPS in my 4400.
I repeat: can anyone who actually *knows* (as opposed to just having a
conspiracy theory) confirm or deny this?

They're Verizon-- they can do whatever they want whenever they want.

They can override any "setting" you can see in the phones. This "control"
all came back when they forced PRL phones on us. Your phone talks on the
pilot channel to the company all the time, without your knowledge or
consent. GPS was forced on the phones by the GOVERNMENT! Read that BIG
BROTHER! Do you think they give a damn at FBI or Homeland Security or CIA
whether you like it or not? Do you live in a vacuum?!
The companies don't care where you are, just as long as it costs you MONEY.
The Government bureaucrats care where you are, what you do and what you
say. CIA spends billions (with a b) on monitoring communications every
year. Sure, they don't care about you...but, in order to get to the bad
guys, they're going to make all the phones allowed on the systems under
THEIR control...just like your landline has been forever.

Even if I believed they could do all of this, either legally without a
warrant or without regard to legality (and in the last four years, I've
come closer to believing it than ever before), that's not what I'm asking.
My question is: Can they do it TECHNICALLY? Are they actually ABLE to
override the Emergency Only setting for GPS in my 4400?
