MPT is supposed to handle a variety of Motorola phones. Right now, I have a
V180 on the ATT part of Cingular. I'm upgrading to a pure Cingular V551.
Will MPT allow me to port my phone book, etc. from the V180 to the V551?
Or does it only work with one model at a time (either model specific or
only capable of handling one phone)?
And the MPT site seems to be offering MPT deluxe at $29.95. Is that a good
price for what seem to be few differences over the MPT lite?

bill, my version of the Quicklink Mobile Phonebook allows importing
and exporting to/from a CSV (comma separated) file. seems like, worst
case, you ought to be able to read your current address book, export
it to a CSV file and then import it into a new file your new phone can
read.

Re: MPT questions
Yes, it will allow you to move from one to the other. When I went from a
v600 to a v3 I just synched with the new phone and all was transfered.
You can get a full version of the software fairly cheap on ebay. Any version
from 2.11 on will update to the latest automatically if you're connected to
the web.

Re: MPT questions
I just used MPT to transfer my phone book from one Moto to another. If
your entries are on the SIM you don't need to do anything. If saved to
the phone (preferable) there is a routine to move from the old phone
to the computer and then to the new phone.

I went from a v220 to a v551. I already had synched the v220 to the PC,
and kept a "backup". After configuring the v551, I did a sync, and all of
the contacts were moved onto the phone. It's not copying from one phone to
another, it's from phone to PC to phone.

That's the one that I bought because I wanted to download, rather than
waiting for a CDROM in the mail, but if you already have MPT, I don't even
know what the added "plus" features are.
My v220 used a "standard" USB cable, like my MP3 player and camera. The
v551 uses a Motorola-specific USB cable. It looks like the v180 uses the
standard cable, so you would need a different one for the v551.
Or you could buy a bluetooth adapter for your PC, since the v551 has
bluetooth.

Well, I'm going from a V180 to a V551. The site says it supports the V3,
which is supposed to be very similar to the V551, but the V551 is not
included in the list. And, seeing as they just added support for the V180,
initial "support" in most programs can be buggy or deficient. I think I'll
stick with what works.

There didn't seem to be many in the comparison chart. Actually, neither
phone came from ATT or Cingular with MPT.

Right on a standard cable for the V180. At least without MPT, both XP &
linux recognize it as a modem & phone. IIRC, there were older threads
indicating that bluetooth synch worked much better for the V551, so I'll
probably spring for the bluetooth adaptor. Especially if it'll also work
with my Palm Tungsten T5, which also has bluetooth. A little Googling
indicates that the Motorola dongle supports bluetooth 1.1, So, I assume the
V551 is also 1.1. My Tungsten supports 1.1 & 1.2. So, would I be safe in
assuming that 1.2 is backward compatible & any USB to bluetooth adaptor
supporting either one would be OK? CompUSA, for instance, seems to have
quite a price range of these in both versions & various brands.

Thanks for the link back to that one. I printed it for future reference.
And thanks for the clarifications, Clarence. They'll make my life a bunch
saner.

I spent time fussing with it after it worked. I wanted to know what worked
and what didn't. There's a lot of interplay between drivers, features
offered, and various connectivity. I went through it with the USB drivers
for the V220, and then a different set of tools for the bluetooth on the
V551.
If all you want to do is copy the photos, or connect to the internet, you
don't need MPT. You can even OBEX-copy contacts one at a time for the
V551, but to synch the phone book and calendar, you need MPT.
I generally don't use MPT for anything but synch. They offer some other
stuff, like SMS messaging and email from your computer, that I have no need
for, and I already have enough file transfer and picture managing software.
MPT is roundly criticized for offering very little real world help. I
think they contracted with Motorola to support Bluetooth on the
Motorola-provided bluetooth adapter. Users contribute all the help for the
other brands. The BVRP/MPT forum contains lots of diatribes from users
that should reasonably be removed, but I guess it's an open forum. It's
misleading though, because there are so many of them that have the same 11
step guide added by BVRP support. Why isn't that 11 step guide prominently
on a "how to" page, instead of buried in the forums?
