I have a copy of Motorola Phone Tools V3.11 and am wondering, is there a
tutorial anywhere that shows you how to use this thing? Do many of you use
it and if so, do you find it handy? I have the V180 and need to get a data
cable so I can hook it up to my USB port on the PC. Is this cable something
that has to be ordered from Motorola or can I buy it at any computer store?
Is it called data to usb or what?
Thanks so much!

Re: Motorola Phone Tools Question?
Mary:
Check Google--
I just got the software, cable and all for about $20 but cables alone
are available for a few bucks. The cable is a standard "A to 5-pin
mini-B" USB cable. Some camera cables are 5 pin so check your digital
camera cable-it may work.
There's a tutorial at: "http://tinyurl.com/dvvdz" for the v220 and it
should be the same for a v180. I think it's the same phone, sans camera.
I just got all the stuff together but so far haven't gotten my computer
to recognize my camera, so can't offer much more.
I had originally planned to use it go get on the Internet and get my
email when I am traveling, but it seems that the cost may be prohibitive
and the speed is only 14.4Kbs, so I may just blow it off and plug into a
phone line from time to time or look for Wi-Fi hot-spots.
Good luck---

Re: Motorola Phone Tools Question?
I use the cable that came with my Canon digital camera. It works fine.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools Question?
Search ebay for "v180 cable" and you'll find plenty for about $6
delivered. It's a standard 5 pin "mini-USB" and you might have one that
came with a camera or MP3 player. CompUSA sells a nice retractable one
for under $10. As for MPT support, there is a forum at www.bvrp.com
which is the manufacturer of the software. You can also find info and
help at www.howardforums.com. MPT is useful for backing up your phone
and creating your own MP3 ringtones from your CD collection as all the
other features. The current version is 3.25 and you can use the Live
Update function in the program to update to the latest version at no
cost.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools Question?
I installed the program, plugged in my phone and the picture came up and it
said initializing but it never seems to find the model. Should it show up in
my "Device Manager" as new hardware?
Thanks in advance!

Have you run Live Update to ensure you have the latest version that
includes your phone?

Start again, with the phone disconnected. Skip the discovering phone part,
go to setup and do a live update. Exit the program, and detect the phone
again. The V551 is probably too new for the version you installed.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools Question?
Ok, now it has found my V180 and put the graphic of it on the screen.
Thanks! I made a few ringtones and sent them to my phone. I may make a few
pictures as well. Does anyone know the dimensions the graphic should be and
how many pixels? Is it a jpg or a gif?
Any other use for MPT that I might find helpful and/or fun?
Thanks!
PS I had the phone disconnected and when I hooked it up, I had to go thru
the New Phone thing again. Will I have to do that every time I plug it in?

the main screen is 128 x 128 pixels and the outside screen is 96 x 32
pixels.
