Does anyone have a link to a gsm coverage map of the US, specifically
the mid-Atlantic states? I can't seem to find anything which is pretty
pathetic and frustrating. The one I did find shows no GSM coverage in my
area of WV despite a local carrier providing GSM phones ( I would think
that means they have GSM coverage) so the map isn't reliable. Most
carriers in the US seem to use CDMA so I hope that doesn't mean anything
bad.
thanks

Re: gsm coverage map
TMobile has a coverage map that's pretty accurate down to a specific
address.

The problem with going to any specific carrier's site is that I'm only
going to see what they service even though the GSM network itself is larger
than that. TMobile, Cingular, and Verizon don't service where I live.
CellularOne (local carrier) does service my area and they supposedly offer
a GSM network but I'm just wondering how much coverage there is and I want
to see a map other than what they provide because I've read that GSM in the
US is not very widespread and the map that CellularOne provides is pretty
widespread as far as GSM is concerned and I want a 2nd opinion basically.

You probably didn't try the T-Mobile site.

That's out of date -- GSM coverage in the USA is now comparable to both TDMA
and CDMA.

Actually I did and theydon't offer service where I am. The closest they get is
about 15 miles north of me. However I don't know if it was TDMA or CDMA that I
was looking at but CellularOne does service my area. I'm curious as to how good
the GSM coverage is though. TMobile does a good job and shows a gradient as to
the level of service, but in my area its all light brown or whatever the color is
representing no service at all.

Thanks John. I feel better now. I'm in a semi-mountainous area (and there is no
major metro area around for over 60 miles; there is WV University 15 miles away
though) and a friend of mine is in a rural area near me and we're both wondering
what type of GSM coverage we should expect. I think he is waiting on me to get
my phone and then will base his purchase off of my experience.
I'm looking at the V3 Razr so I'm hoping it will work out well. I'm going to
start another thread concerning that.

Okay. I thought you might have had "nationwide roaming" available for you.
In my area, there's no T-Mobile, but I can see the outline of the coverage
area of the local vendor as a roaming territory.
That carrier just "joined forces with Cingular", whatever that means.
Their old web page has either been hijacked or abandoned.

Note that TDMA and many CDMA phones can roam on AMPS, whereas GSM can't. That
can be significant in rural areas.

With respect to your other contributions John, that broad
generalization does not hold true for northern WV.

You're located in a rural area, away from major metropolitan areas.
Right now GSM in northern WV is largely interstate only. I don't
think you'll be happy with current coverage.
I have friends and family from Clarksburg, Fairmont and Morgantown.
I've had GSM coverage from Pittsburgh south to Wheeling on 79 as
recently as July '04. Decent GSM coverage from Kentucky into
Charleston on I-64, and north on I-79 for about 30 miles.
Absolutely nothing in between. That looks like it should have
changed. I'll be back ouside of Fairmont this December.
T-Mobile's street level site indicates very limited coverage in
Morrgantown. CellularOne and West Virginia Wireless have only the
broad indistinct maps. According to those there shoud at least be
interstate coverage on 79, 68, and US 119 north from I-68.
We know two persons on US Cellular, if you aren't committed to GSM.
Coverage, call continuity, and voice quality are excellent from
Clarksburg, Fairmont, and Morgantown.
Whatever you do, I would make the availability of external antennas
and car kits an important requirement.

Tom S.

I got my phone last Saturday and so far the actual coverage seems to be
okay but I haven't gone more than 20 miles from my apartment and my apt.
is only about 1 mile from the interstate. At home I have 5 bars, at work
I think I had 3 inside the building. Actually I was in Morgantown last
weekend and it was good up there too. The only problems I have right
now is the low earpiece volume on the v3 razr phone that everyone
complains about. I'm constantly asking my girlfriend what she siad on
the phone but I was doing that on the last phone as well and it was
loud. She mumbles and is a low talker so that doesn't help. I don't have
any issues talking with my parents though.

My mom is in moundsville and my dad is in northern Pitt area around the
airport.

I saw the same thing for TMobile as you have said and CellularOne's map
is pretty much useless but I've been told there isn't any service in
wheeling but i think there is since the green area pretty much follows
I70. Now I may not have service in moundsville where my mom is now but i
didn't have it with Sprint either so I'm not losing anything. North of
washington PA I'm into the roaming area from what i'm told and I have
100 minutes for that.

the nice thing about the plan I have right now is that I have unlimited
anytime, night, AND weekend minutes. I don't have any per minute charges
because I don't have any limit on minutes to begin with and I only have
to pay $50 a month. As you know I'm limited as to what services I can
choose from and I never really liked any of the phones anyone else had
which could be a problem if I end up returning the razr however I do
like the v555 that cellularone has so I could just switch to that if
needed. It seems to have the same features as the razr but not in the
same form factor. I still have about a week left on my 14 day trial
although I think I can switch out the phone anytime.
