I noticed that my Motorola cell phone user manual has only one patent
number listed for the phone - that's odd. I'm wondering if they
only have the one patent or if it's a printing error.

The patent number listed toward the end of my manual is : RE34,976

If any of you have your Motorola manual handy, would you please check
and let me know if Your manual shows the same thing. You should have a
section titled Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights.

    Thank you.

I should have indicated that I have the V3 also. The number is listed
on page 106 at the bottom after the index..
    "U.S. patent Re. 34,976"
    Thanks!

That clearly isn't the patent number. I have to ask though, is this just
idle curiosity or do you really care?

    Re: Motorola Patent Number Error??

Sorry I don't have a Motorola phone. However I was able to verify that
the patent number is valid. It was issued to a Richard J Helferich and
it seems to cover a digital voice storage cell phone.

    I hope that helps

    Re: Motorola Patent Number Error??

Actually it's a college assignment. We're trying to determine the
key patents used for cell phones. My understanding is that the
manufacturers are required to list on the product or the manual all
patents that the product is protected by. I just couldn't believe
that Motorola just has one patent covering the V3 phone. That's why
I'm asking for help to find out if my manual has a printing error. I
would really appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

    Thanks

    Re: Motorola Patent Number Error??

Thanks for verifying the validly of the patent number. I found out that
the Patent Office puts "Re" in front of the number when the patent
has been examined twice (re-verified that it's a valid invention) The
    "Re" Stands for "Reissued".

Thanks for your help. I'll search the inventor's name.

I only see that patent number listed.

Sorry, I left off the "RE" when I looked and found that Patent #34,976 was
for an "Improved Cover for Fruit Jars" and was issued 4/15/1862. Adding the
    "RE" certainly makes a difference!

    Re: Motorola Patent Number Error??

A manufacturer is NOT required to list on a product or manual all the
    patents that protect the product.

Listing the patent numbers on the product (or in the booklet)
effectively provides notice to the public that the product is patented.
If the patent owner sues another party for patent infringement, then
the patent owner has a stronger case to argue in court that the
infringer was already aware of the patent when they started to
infringe. Otherwise the alleged infringer may be able to argue that
they were not aware of their infringement until they were so notified
    by the patent owner.

To find other patents that cover your cell phone, I suggest doing a
search on the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office web site.

    <http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#marking>

A patentee who makes or sells patented articles, or a person who does
so for or under the patentee is required to mark the articles with
the word "Patent" and the number of the patent. The penalty for
failure to mark is that the patentee may not recover damages from an
infringer unless the infringer was duly notified of the infringement
and continued to infringe after the notice.
