What kinds of sound files can the Razr play as ring tones?
I see from the motorola web site that it uses "polyphonic" tones, but I don't
know what kind of file that is.

For example, could I put a WAV file on the phone and have it work?
Would rather know ahead of time than experiment....

Thanks in advance for all replies, which are most appreciated.

To keep file size down, MP3 is best. There are plenty of free converters
    available.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that.
Do you have a preferred converter to recommend?

Also what sort of files are polyphonic files? I guess the question is, what
sort of file extension do they have.

    Thanks again for your replies.

    I like this one and:
    http://www.allthesoft.com/mp3/mp3-co...wav-converter/
    and the one at www.xilisoft.com.

Polyphonic is not a format, it just means that it will handle things
    like MIDI and MP3 files.

Just Google "midi editor" and you'll find lots. I edit everything on
Mobile Phone Tools and then just upload to the phone.

    MIDI is polyphonic.
    MP3 is wave.

Re: Newbie question about ring tones...

    FYI

Polyphonic simply means "multiple sounds", which any modern keyboard
can do: more than one key at the same time. The original MOOG
synthesizers were monophonic - only one sound at a time. So polyphonic
isn't really a format, just a type of sound.

MIDI files are where this comes into play. The file format stores each
note as a discreet "command", with attributes like pitch and duration.

WAV is very different. It is a digitized form of audio - the data does
not represent notes per se, but rather a sampling of the sound at
    given (very short) intervals.

MP3 is just a compressed form of WAV - like .zip but "lossy". Zip is a
lossless compression, whereas MP3 is lossy - some (hopefully
inaudible) information is discarded. So you can decompress an MP3 back
to WAV but there will be loss of audio accuracy.

MIDI files are very small, MP3 files are medium, and WAV files are
very large. Hence, MIDI and MP3 are best for phones, since there's
    limited fidelity anyway.

    My $.02.

Thanks for the good answer. Will do.
Maybe Mobiledit will let me edit the songs too. I'll check.
