I'm talking about the phones that will be like a video phone, where you
can see video as well as talking to the person. Remember the cartoon
"The Jetsons"? That type of phone is the one many people are looking
    forward to.

Are the Japanese working on it? I would assume they would create such
    a technological wonder before anyone.

See More: when will the ultimate phones come out?

"Many" people? Many people, myself for one, would not want such a
    thing.

    I hope not.

Any you know what they say about assumptions, don't you?

The ultimate phone with be a cell phone that allows the user to make
and receive calls, it will NOT browse the web, get email, take
pictures, or any other annoying damn thing that phones seem to be
doing now. The ultimate phone will administer a painful electric
shock to the user if he/she/it tries to use it while operating a
motor vehicle, make or receive calls in a restaurant, church,
funeral parlor, theater and dozens of other inappropriate places or
if the user shouts into it.

    V3x ?
Sounds like most 3G phones - UMTS two way video calls have been out for
sometime now in Europe, but we don't get Jetsons cartoons.
Works OK if you both have coverage.

Go to Europe, it's called 3G. Real live video phones in people's hands.

Real 3G as in UMTS. Not what Verizon and Sprint advertise.

Yeah, a Japanese company called NTT DoCoMo is working on 4G technology which will provide 1 Gigabit connections- similar to the speeds found on corporate LAN environments. This 4G technology will allow high quality video streaming.

When i mentioned "The Jetsons" tv show, i was talking about the video
phones they showed all the time. This was back in the what, 1960's or
70's. Damn near 50 years ago. I hope we get the technology here in
    the states soon!

The problem is limited spectrum. There isn't enough spectrum available for a
large number of people to be using that kind of speed.

Re: when will the ultimate phones come out?

As I understood it there were 3G networks in the U.S., is that correct?
If so then are the networks offering handsets with video calling
    capability?

Video calling is only really just starting to catch on here; up until
now there really haven't been enough people with 3G handsets to make it
a regularly used feature. Usually one would either know one or other
person with a 3G handset or perhaps even no one at all. The price is
also still relatively high. Hence a combination of those factors meant
it wasn't really being used by most people. It still isn't really, but
I think it is slowly starting to be used more.

Video calling was put forward as the killer 3G application, but I
would say that fast music downloads are proving more popular. I could
    be wrong there of course.

Personally I find it to be a rather nice feature. I video called my
father in Australia a couple of years ago and it was rather nice to be
able to see him as well as speak to him whilst he was over there.
