MPT which worked fine with my V180. About two days ago, I bought a Razr
V3 off ebay (just a plain old V3, at least that's what the seller
advertized), but MPT can't find it, period. Tried uninstalling MPT,
cleaning the registry, re-installing, running PhoneTools, but still no
soap. Under Connections on the phone's Settings menu, there is only
Bluetooth, no USB. I don't use bluetooth (don't even have it in my
desktop), and would like to transfer some sounds and wallpaper from the
V180 into the V3 (apparently they aren't stored in the SIM card). What
    have I missed?

    TIA,
    Pete

Do this in exactly this order:

Go to Device Manager and delete any reference to the v3 or USB modem
    from Ports and Modems entries.

    Reboot PC

    Install MPT and run it.

Take the battery out of your phone for 30 seconds, put it back in and
    turn on the phone.

    Plug USB cable into phone.

MPT should detect and install the phone.

OK, did everything you suggested, but still no joy. So I put my sim card
back in the V180, turned it on, pugged it in, MPT instantly detected it,
and ran fine. But still no go with the Razr. MPT simply does nothing --
pluged in the Razr when propmted to do so and watched running process
for about 2 minutes. Mpt~~.exe showed absolutely no cpu activity the
whole time. This is an unlocked phone, and the screen always says
"Cingular", which is not my provider, and this may have something to do
with it because I've run across some discussion on how the different
providers tweak things here and there.

I'm beginning to suspect it's related to the absence of a USB selection
under Settings->Connections in the Razr's menu. Is there some way to
re-create this selection (as in activate the USB connection)?

You can check your SEEMS and edit if needed:

    SEEM 0032_0001; offset 83 - bit 7: USB Settings (1 on, 0 off)

Thanks for the advice so far; it's been very enlightening. I'm quite new
to tweaking cell phones and have been looking at sites like Motox, etc.
There appear to be all kinds of possibilities for customizing a phone,
but if I can't connect to the phone to begin with how can I change the
    SEEM?

The other thing which has been a bit frustrating with the Motox etc.
sites is that they talk about SEEMs and FLEXs, and supply a suite of
programs for editing them, but I havent' been able to locate an
explanation as to what these things are, not on the sites themselves nor
    in a wiki.

The MPT drivers are different from the P2k drivers needed for edits and
other mods. There's also a way to put the phone into programming mode
    manually if required.

    Here's what you need:
RSD Lite 3.0 - this is the program used for flashing and flexing. You
don't really need it except for loading the drivers. There is also a
program just for installing the drivers available from the Motox site:
http://www.motomodding.com/vault/sof....0.rarMotokit: This is my favorite for doing SEEM edits although there areplenty of others. http://www.motomodding.com/vault/sof..._v1.06.rarWhen you first run Motokit move your cursor to the 3d item from the lefton the menu bar, open it and select English.Next click SEEMS and then Custom Edit, make the change, restart yourphone and see the USB menu.Of course it's always a good idea to backup your SEEMS first using themenu item for that. When I put the phone in programming mode, the usb connection comes
alive, so its a question of enabling the usb port for use in phone mode.
Is there a way to do this from the keypad?

    Thanks,
    Pete

Only if you have the menu item turned on under "connections" or else you
can turn the menu item on with the SEEM edit.

Let me see if I understand things correctly so far: it's necessary to be
able to get inside the phone to edit the SEEM file in order to have the
USB connection appear on the menu and/or turn on the USB port. However
the only route I have into the phone is the USB cable, and the phone
doesn't respond to a USB connection, not even in program mode. I'm in
the situation of needing to use the port to turn it on, but it's turned
off -- rather like being in a dark room with the light switch in the
next room and the door locked. SO, how can I edit this SEEM file, via
bluetooth? Is there a sequence of keys which can be pressed on the
keypad? Have Schroedinger's cat turn the thing on while I'm not looking?

I understand what you're saying but the USB "switch" is just between two
modes. It will work in P2k mode either way if you have the P2K drivers
installed. Another good program to get the drivers loaded is
    P2KCommander.

If I haven't already mentioned it, please be sure to use only a USB port
on the back of your PC - one that's part of the motherboard as opposed
to an auxiliary one on the fron of the PC or through a hub. Also, if
you don't have the Motorola OEM USB cable try different cables. A
retractable one that I was using was causing all kinds of problems till
I plugged in the Motorola one.
