I have a car power adapter cable from a garmin GPS streetpilot i3 -- also
uses min USB port.
Would this work as a charging cable for the razr v3?

The Razr can be charged via the USB port on a computer. If the garmin can be
charged that way, it would seem that they are compatable, just a guess.

It may work but my guess is that it won't. I have tried many different
USB wall chargers (RIM, HTC etc.) with Motorola phones and vice versa.
While most phones can be charged with the Moto chargers, the Motorols
usually do not charge with chargers from other manufacturers.
My guess (and it really is only a guess, I have never investigated it)
is that the Motorola devices stick with the USB spec and do not draw
current before notifying the USB host about the ammount of current they
intend to draw. Since most manufacturer's chargers are simple 5V sources
with no intelligence, the notification process fails and the Motorola
phone won't charge.
However, it should be safe to give it a try. If your garmin charger has
an USB plug that fits into the V3 it won't do any harm.

Maybe. Try it.
My experience with the Razr v3 that I got about a week before I got
its charger was:
Ipod charger: didn't work
PC with USB cable: didn't work w/o device driver installed
Mac with USB cable: worked just fine and charged the phone
Motorola charger: worked just fine and charged the phone

The reason I'm afraid to try is because the car battery is 12V. If the cable
from my gps passes thru the 12V verbatim (perhaps the GPS can tolerate from
5V to 12V), it may damage the phone if it expects only 5V. Perhaps I should
post this question in the gps forum.
A curiosity about PC with USB cable: it doesn't seem to charge the phone,
even though I can transfer data back and forth. Also, many mod sites warn
users to charge the battery fully before flashing the phone, which seems to
imply the PC USB cable does not charge the phone? The drivers I installed
for this phone is the ones that come with motorola phone tools.

I have a homebuilt PC and mostly I use P2K Tools with my Razr v3. Every
session where I use the PC / mini UPC interface has charged the phone.
I also bought a car lighter to mini UPC cable. My cigarette lighter is
switched through the ignition. What that means is as long as the car is
on and running, the phone will charge. The only time the car cable
doesn't charge the phone is when I hit a bump. The mini USB connection
to the phone is very easily dislodged.

I would expect it to work perfectly. USB is a standard and if they were going to run a different
voltage I think they would use a different connector, or else what would happen if someone ran a usb
lead from a PC into the Garmin?
My V3 car-charger charges my PDA phone perfectly.

The reason that the battery must be properly charged before flashing is
that the phone does not charge from USB _while in flash mode_. Once the
phone is fully on, it should charge from USB.
Do you connect your phone directly to the pc or is a USB hub involved?
