When we go to the (recently-aquired) cabin we are just on the edge of cell
phone service.
We can get a signal less than a mile from the cabin, in terrain that is
heavily forested and has variances of elevation of no more than 50 feet
vertical
We really don't want to have permanent (line) phone service in the cabin,
but it would be nice to have cell phone service just in case
Someone suggested we get a cell phone booster for the car and/or cabin
Any advice and experience with such a device would be appreciated
Oh yes, primary service is T-Mobile
But Cingular is the provider in and around the cabin
The phones are Motorola Razor V3s
We also have some Motorola V300s that could be left at the cabin for 911 if
a booster is a solution

I live under the same condition. I have no service inside the house. I had
an extra magnetic antenna for the vehicle. I put the antenna on top of the
roof and ran the wire inside through a window. I have two bars of signal
now. Not able to walk around inside the house and talk but can set in my
chair and talk all I want.
Maybe it will work for you.

they're using to keep customers from suing them, now, with a new company
policy. I noticed Verizon Wireless now has a whole paragraph telling you
you cannot have a booster amp or repeater or anything that'll connect
your phone to their system.
It's BS.....It's not their system.
These bastards keep calling me so I'm feeding them to the spambots.

Verizon on 611 didn't know, either!
All in good fun. It's a great company, just like GM, Ford, Worldcom, or
any of those other bankrupt assholes that should be in jail ....

They look at your GPS position and notice that everyone else near that
position has little or no service, except you are so strong CDMA has your
transmitter turned down to 20 mw and you're still swamping the receiver.

There are very few cell phones that work inside a brick and steel I-beam
building. When I go to B.J.'s Warehouse, Wal-Mart or such, I need to be
near a window or door to get a signal. That's been true for just about
every cell phone / carrier I've used. It may very well be the nature of
the beast.

My experience using TMobile has been different. At places like Wal-Mart,
Costco, Sam's Club, Home Depot, etc, my wife and I always call each
other when we're done with our individual browsing to find each other
and head to the checkout counter.

Like all carriers, service quality varies by area. In my hometown of
Honolulu and places I frequently visit such as southern California,
Florida and Houston, TX I find the service to be excellent - fact I've
had no problems anywhere I've gone in the USA. T-Mobile has a quality
of service guide that is very accurate on their website. You can check
the quality right down to a specific street.
To make a blanket statement like "(Any Carrier) is bad" based on one
phone in one (unstated) area is not particularly accurate or helpful.
Did you also consider that you may have had a bad phone?

I Agree T-Mobile in Torrington Connecticut is great! but
because they use 1900MHZ... Not great in Stone buildings (Salvation
Army, Saint Marons, Torrington Community Soup Kitchen probally a few
others) but In my apartment I hit all 7 of the 7 bars of my Nokia
6340i without a problem!
Contrast that with my Alltel Nokia 3585i, its the same deal
signal wise. Only in my apartment I only get 4 bars out of 7.

I'm not getting ANY service IN OR OUT of the cabin.
Tried climbing on the roof (A-Frame 40+ feet) and got no signal there
either.
Also tried it on the middle of the lake about 150 yards from the cabin.
No joy.
As I wrote, the nearest point where I get service is a mile down the road

The amp won't help you. There must be some signal for it to work. You
are in a shadow from all the cells. What's needed is a hilltop repeater
to fill in the shadow. That won't happen, in America, like it does all
over Europe to improve smoother coverage. There's repeaters all over in
places like Switzerland.

Hate to say it but you are SOL
No cheap way of getting it done.
Now it depends on how much you want to spend.
You could have a tower installed, correct antenna and amps to boost signal
in and out.
You could go with a Satellite phone.
Or
You could check with Internet satellite service that has the capability of
using VOIP.
I think I would just drive the 2 miles round trip to use the phone and tell
family and friends to leave a voice message if they need to contact you.
