Having great difficulty getting MPT to work..
I select connect using a cable and it says "Searching for modem, this may
take 20-30 seconds" but it never completes. Why is it looking for a modem
when its told you not to connect the phone? Anyway I've tried it with and
without the phone connected maybe 30 times. I've tried uninstalling and
re-installing MPT several times. All my other USB devices - WLan adaptor,
printer and camera work fine. The Application logs don't have any clues.
If I uninstall MPT from the windows control panel is it leaving something
behind that maybe the problem?

Which version of MPT are you running? Which phone are you using?
There are known problems with MPT and some Motorola phones; the software
on CD has not kept up with the latest models of phones!

Re: MPT problem
First, go into Device Manager and delete the Motorola USB modem from the USB
listings and wherever else it might appear. Next, leave the phone unplugged
and run MPT and then Live Update from within it. That way you'll be sure
that your phone is on the list. When prompted, plug in the phone and all
should work OK.

Not sure how to find the version if MPT won't start properly. I'm using the
version supplied on CD with my 18 moth old V3i. Have also tried liveupdating
it but it says it's the latest version.

If you default installed, go into C:\programmes\motorola Phone tools and
have a look at build.txt for details about the installed version. I use a
V3i with MPT with no problems via Bluetooth and cable, details of my
installed version are:
[BUILD]
ProductName=Motorola Phone Tools
Version=4.00
Language=ENU
MasterId=051012005961
Time=16:20:50
Date=10/25/05
Build=289
The V3i is on T-Mobile UK; unlocked and unchanged from that issued by
T-Mobile.

I can only find the motorola modem driver when the phone is connected. It
appears under "Modems" and nowhere else. It dissapears when I disconnect the
phone. So I hooked up the phone, deleted the modem driver, disconnected
phone. Ok so far.
Then tried to run MPT... It gets to "choose a profile" then...
1) If I select "cancel" or close the window then MPT closes - so that's
wrong option.
or
2) If I select the default profile and hit OK it says "Welcome to phone
setup wizard". I select "Cable" and then "Next". It opens a box "Searching
for the modem" which it never finds. If I try to close the box windows tells
me "This program is not responding...End Now"
I can't do a live update from within MPT as it doesn't get that far. If I
use the Liveupdate prog that is installed with MPT it says I have the latest
version.
So unfortunately it won't let me follow the proceedure you suggested. I'm
never prompted to connect the phone either.
If I do close MPT and connect the phone Windows detects it and offers to
install the modem driver. I've tried letting it but that also makes no
difference either. MPT still can't find the modem.

When it starts searching, connect the phone. You should see the driver get
installed and then MPT should find the phone. Also, you might want to try
Bluetooth if you have a dongle for the PC.

Re: MPT problem
You may find the driver in Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options. I could
not find it in Device Manager but found it in Phone & Modem Options.

Yeah tried that. It goes through the found new hardware routine, installs
the driver ok but then MPT never finds it.

I think that might be the next step. Ready to strangle this thing :-)

Thanks, yes found it there, uninstalled it ok but no matter what MPT won't
get past "Searching for the modem".
I've now tried tried full and partial uninstalls, with and without rebooting
in between and have just downloaded another copy of the modem driver in case
the one on the MPT CD is faulty. Also tried connecting and not connecting
the phone but nothing seems to make any difference so far.
Thanks anyway.

Re: MPT problem
Just wanted to add that I if I set the USB port default mode to "Memory
card" on the phone, then connect it to the PC I can browse the phone as a
memory card. So the USB port is ok as is the cable presumably. Have tried
second cable anyway.

Humm. If I leave it in mamory card mode and run MPT then MPT switches the
phone to modem mode and then asks me how the phone is connected - which is
plainly daft as it's just used the cable to switch modes on the phone!

Re: MPT problem
See Jan 14 message from "Dick Ballard" which provides the following:
1) In MPT to to General Setup
2) Go To the Communications Tab
3) Click on Change Modem
4) Click Next
5) Make sure Motorola USB Modem is highlighted and click Next
6) Check the box for Do Not Automatically Detect and click Next
7) On the left side choose Motorola GSM and on the right side choose your
model and click Next
8) Click Finish
9) Click OK out of the General Setup

Thanks for the reply but that's a problem right there....
I can't get MPT to the point where I can do _anything_ with it. First thing
it does is put up a splash box, then it opens a Choose Profile dialog. If I
do anything except hit "OK" MPT closes or freezes. If I select the default
profile (the only one) and select OK it opens another box asking me to
choose a connection type and if I select "cable", OK then hangs up as well.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything (MPT and the modem driver) every
which way I can think of but it seems to make no difference. I can talk to
the phone in memory card mode no problem.
