Let me save those of you leaving Nextel some trouble. "Number Guard"
is such a hoax and hassle that I do not want to go into that much
detail. If you want to get rid of it - this is the number you need:
866-681-0038 For more information on why - read below.
There is no way for anyone to steal your number out from under you -
like Nextel would like you to believe. The only way this will happen
is if the person wanting to "port" your number knows the account
number, the social security number and the billing address of the
person associated with that account.
I thought the same thing as most when I first got the email about
number guard - I did not want anyone to take my number. Little did I
know.
When I called to take number guard off before switching carriers -
they told me that it had never been enabled. Interesting. So I went
to the new carrier and went to switch over. When the number did not
port - they told me Nextel blocked my account because of a customer
request to not let the number go.
So I called Nextel....an HOUR later...I almost had it removed. Do not
bother calling 611 or just plain Nextel help. You need to talk to
someone in customer service...then wait on hold for them to tell you
yes you do have number guard on, and let them transfer you to someone
who can get rid of it. Then that person puts you on hold. Then tells
you to call 866-681-0038 if you do not get through when they transfer
you. You wait on hold for 30 more minutes and then the call is
dropped (good thing they gave you the 866 number...coincidence?).
Call that 866 number and wait about 5 mins talk to the right person
and remove the guard. BUT WAIT there's more! Before you hang up -
MAKE SURE they remove number guard not only from your number, but from
your account as well. They add it to your account whether you want
them to or not - without them telling you.
Once you do this - you should be good to port.
Do yourself a favor - do not enable it to begin with. With everything
they check: social, acct #, address, etc etc - there is almost no way
for anyone to "fake it" and take your number from you. BELIEVE ME -
it took 2 days for them to get all of the account info straight - make
sure each line your new carrier enters is exactly like your printed
bill - otherwise the port will not go through either.
Just my $.02

Account number and billing address are printed on every bill. I don't
know about you, but I don't give my SIN/SSN to companies unless they are
giving me money. I'd never give a telco or cellular company my SIN/SSN,
so there would be nothing to verify.

Re: Number Guard
IMO I think this is somewhat USA PATRIOT Act-related....
