Not at this time. In the near future, though, there will be a specific
series of units, primarily for public safety customers, which will
allow a short range true direct unit-to-unit capability.

Not at this time, but there is talk that NEXTEL will be deploying 2
phones in the future that will utilize such a feature using 900MHz
spreadspectrum.

Re: two-way radio function?
That would be so cool if they do. That way two Nextels that can't get
service, but are in a similar area would be able to still communicate.

Coming real soon- they've announced field testing of it, and I think the
first phone with the capability comes out second quarter.

Re: two-way radio function?
I wish that they didn't make us buy a new phone to do that! For that
matter, I could just go out and buy two new Motorola two-ways and do the
same thing for cheaper.
So...is there a download that you can use current Nextel's to do the same
thing?

No- the way I understand it, they are putting a separate radio in the phone
to get the functionality. As much as I don't want to, I'll probably end up
replacing my current phones, as will a couple of my buddies- we spend quite
a bit of time in the mountains during the summer (way out of coverage), and
the functionality would be awesome on those fishing and camping trips.

Re: two-way radio function?
Which I would call this as "Off-Network" Direct Connect. At this time, you
will only be able to use In-Network Direct Connect. Hopefully this
Off-Network Direct Connect will ease some of the hassles of In-Network
Direct Connect. Primarily, Off-Network Direct Connect would be targeted for
Public Safety.

Re: two-way radio function?
Thanks for the info. I'd love to have this feature! I think that it would
be a major selling point against the other PTT companies.
