I have the i860 and have been trying to set it up as a wireless
modem on my older Laptop. The i88 worked well as a wireless modem
and was no problem to setup. I know, it's slow but it works, I use
it when I'm out of town.

The i88 used the serial port, the i860 uses the USB port, I have
the USB cable and downloaded the modem driver for the 860 from
Motorola and it sets up the modem in DUN but I get the error that
the modem is not working properly. It tries to dial. I called
Nextel again and they led me to a different download, but the
    results are the same.

I un-installed the previous driver and installed the new one then
plugged in the cable to the phone then the cable to the USB port.
    Same error message.

The Laptop runs Win98 SE ( a PII ) and other USB devices work. I'm
wondering if I need a patch for the Laptop to use the i860. The
cable is ok as I can download pictures to the PC.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Bill Watt

The usb cables can be a pain in the ass. Try some fixes on my site if that doesn't work pay the extra $10 and get the trouble free serial cable like you had before. They still make it for the i860 only it is a bit more expensive.

My trouble shooting and tips for the usb cable: http://www.harrythompson.com/trouble...sbtroubles.htm

Also if you scroll to the bottom windows 98 had a few extra steps that needed to be done.. I think it was installing a composit device(? off the top of my head) and it will ask you for your windows 98 cd to do this. If you don't have it I have the file there. I also have the origional adobe instructions that came with the usb cables a long time ago.. Which has all about the windows 98 installation.

Thanks for the information. Nice site for troubleshooting! I'll get
to work on it as soon as I can.

I have the serial cable for the i88 and the Service Center told me
it's the same cable, only that the little rubber stub has to be
filed down to make it fit. I did that and it fits but couldn't get
it to work on the i860. Nextel tells me the i860 has to use the USB
data cable. So I ordered the USB cable but no help.

BTW. I've been using the Calculator but today it tells me it's
disabled, same thing with Downloads and other Java apps. I called
Nextel and they said it's in the SIM and a program has to be
installed to get it back. The nearest Service Center with the
program is over 40 miles away.

Ever hear of this and what may have caused it to become disabled? I
haven't used that area except for the Calculator that I recall.

    Really appreciate the help.

I couldn't imagine the pin lay out being the same on both cables. They changed the charging lay out. They were wrong you can use the serial cable to do what you want to do. The serial cable is very slow to load ringtones and wallpapers with. A ringtone load on the serial cable will take about 15 mins where a usb cable will take about a min.

Now the sim doesn't effect the java aps. Sometimes the java aps do become currupt. This can often come as a result from pulling the battery off while a java ap is running. If it was not closed properly it will become corrupt.

Motorola has a utility to load a java ap call download aps (http://idenphones.motorola.com/idenP...ppsUtility.exe ). From that ap you can redownload any factory aps to the phone. Or you can use a program called webjal( i have on my site) to load any games or aps from website like www.snazzie.com

Thanks to you I got the Calculator back. I guess that program is
probably the one Nextel told me some Service Centers have to
    restore Java Apps.

Now to set up the i860 as a wireless modem.

    Thanks again.

Well if you loaded the java aps that means the drivers are all set. The phone should be ok as a modem.. if you go to your modems to you see the motorola usb modem there? If so will it let you query the modem?

Yep, the modem is there, but diagnostics provide an error, modem
not responding. Same error when trying to connect.

Still no luck. I'm trying everything. I may need a patch for the
older Laptop at least that's what the tech at the Nextel Service
    Center told me.

In the middle of all this Windows wouldn't load all the way on my
PC. Had to work on that.

    Calculator is working fine. !!

Wow the only patch that I have ever heard of if for the usb driver through windows xp and 2000. It was an issue with windows. The latest updates from windows include the patch. Now windows 95 I don't think support the usb driver patch.

I would check the com port that the usb port is using. It is common that windows assigns a port that is already used.

For a much better tech support try 800-453-0920.

Thanks for the phone number. That's Motorola Customer Care I
believe, they were helpful before and I've been looking for the
    number. I'll try that.

I checked the com ports again and the modem is on com 1 and it's
the only one using it. The IRQ is 4 and it's the only one using
    that.

Usually the error is modem not working properly and the same when I
try to connect. One time I got the no dial tone message and thought
I was getting somewhere, but no. Diagnostics provide the modem not
    working properly error.

Suppose I remove everything related to the modem on the Laptop,
what file(s) do you think I should install to start over?

    I have downloaded and installed:

    usb_file.exe
    USBInstallation.exe
    iDENDownloadAppsUtility.exe --- Installed for Calculator

It's been awhile but I also have these:
    MediaDownloader_R01.01.02.exe --- For the i88 I believe.
    NOL_Dial-Up.Zip ( this was for the i88 I think )

I agree with you, USB is a PITA. :-)

Thanks again for the help. You sure know your cell phones.

1st I just thought of the i860 acts wierd if you have a running java ap. Make sure you don't have any suspended aps.

I would just delete the modem out of control panel. then restart the computer with the phone plugged in. It should find new hardware. Manually search for dirvers c:\program files\motorola inc\Motorola USB Modem Installation

then make sure you choose motorola iden usb modem 4/26/01 is the driver date of mine.

I ran this USBInstallation.exe file on my PC and it worked right
    away. Including Diags.

Odd though, on the PC I have driver files in the C:\Program
    Files\Motorola\iDEN USB Driver folder.

On the Laptop the folder is C:\Program Files\Motorola inc\Motorola
USB Modem Installation and the only file in there is Uninst.isu

I copied the driver files over to the Laptop, removed the modem and
    re-installed. No good. I couldn't locate the 4/26/01 driver.

I don't like taking up your time with this. I'll try the Motorola
    CC number tomorrow.

    Thanks again.
