Mr. T you really ain't seeing the point of the complaint.
The original poster is not complaining that the service jacked
up the rates... they didn't. The problem is that his local county
government forced a tax on something which they have little to
no interest in and provide no additional service, especially
relating to the reason for the tax.

Do you drive a car MB? I imagine at one point you didn't own one.
Why do you need one now?
What about your computer? I bet you didn't have one 20 years ago,
or if you did it certainly wasn't capable of doing what it does now.
Why do you need such a fancy one now?
What about your home? I be you didn't own a home at some point.
Why do you need one now?
Heck, what about those vaccines you likely got as a kid? They didn't
need to fancy-smancy vaccines 100 years ago, why do you need them
now?
Times change.

I think I've got a solution to this guys tax issue.
Why don't some of you folks, who obviously think you are not paying enough
taxes, send him $2 each month?
Put up, or shut up!

Maybe I passed over it, but did anyone explain with this $2/per handset tax
was specifically for?

I have one because I can afford it, If there were no cars I would find
a job within walking distance from home or use the train.
> What about your computer? I bet you didn't have one 20 years ago,

> Why do you need such a fancy one now?
Again I do not NEED it, I love having it and it provides hours of
entertainment for me and my partner. Just like I don't need this $45.00
a month cable computer access, net zero would work if I wanted for
$10.00 a month. If I woke up tomorrow and we both had no jobs we could
easily ditch the Internet access, the 200 channels of cable TV, the
$40.00 a week to have the lawn done, the maid twice a month @$50.00 a
pop, cars detailed at $100.00 each every few months, and FINALLY we
could ditch the cell phones, and guess what, the sun would still rise in
the East.
> What about your home? I be you didn't own a home at some point.

I agree shelter I think IS a necessity unlike a cell phone...

Your comparing medical care to a cell phone? LOL Lets see I need
Glucose for my Diabetes and I need (want) Mobilweb, Vision on my cell
account, HMMM which should I get?

Yeah and obviously people are becoming too dependent on BS to see the
true needs of survival . MB

Re: Montg. County, MD Gets $2 Per Line TAX
It's not an "ISSUE" it is 2 bucks a month, pay it or cancel your service
and save $14.95 a month plus TAXES. Gas prices here have went up about
15 cents per gallon in the last 2 weeks, but guess what I still have to
drive to work and to run errands. I guess I could get on Usenet and
***** but what good would it do. MB

Why should I subsidize someone who is (1) too cheap to pay the $2.00 tax
or (2) Has poorly managed his money so now he has to sweat every penny
he spends. I am paying for enough deadbeats with my taxes already...

Oh, so now you are qualified to judge everybody, about what job they had,
about how much money they have to live the rest of their lives? How do you
know he poorly managed his money?
Geez MB, you must be special to know so much ...

And how would you feel if your local city suddanly started
charging you $2 per month for your car? Above any beyond
the taxes you pay for roads, above and beyond the sales tax
you paid for when you purchased it. Above an beyond the
taxes you pay for fuel, and the fees you pay to have it licensed.
Wouldn't you feel it a bit unfair for your city to say: Hey,
we're not going to provide any additional services to you
as an automobile owner, but we're going to charge you $2
extra each month for each car.
> Your comparing medical care to a cell phone? LOL Lets
> see I need Glucose for my Diabetes and I need (want)

Not at all. I wasn't the one who said a cell phone is a
necessity. (But while we're on the topic, I think the point
wasn't so much that a cell phone was a necessity as much
as a very useful tool that assists a persons standard of
living...) My point is that times change. What was seen
as frivious years ago is considered a necessity now. To
take an extreme example, you said a house (shelter) was
a necessity. Yet early humans likely lived in the wild
will little more than a tree or a rock outcropping as their
shelter, and yet they lived.
Cellphones, while not a necessity for live, do serve a
useful purposes beyond mere luxury.
A car is a nice example of this: It isn't a necessity, as
you correctly pointed out. But it does make life easier.
It *can* be a luxury item, and is for a lot of people.
This whole discussion is of course well off the point of
the original posters remarks. Namely that the gov't
shouldn't be able to just willy-nilly levy a new tax just
so that they can make more money.

Oh, I see! You don't want to pay $2 in additional taxes either.
Why didn't you just agree with him in the first place?
Could have saved us all a lot of time!

IT IS $2 OR I"M SORRY $4 IN YOUR CASE, GET A GRIP, GIVE UP 3 COFFEE AND
A NEWS PAPER AND THERE IS YOUR STUIPID TAX. THE MONEY THAT YOU OR THE
COUNTY IS GOING TO HAVE TO SPEND TO BRING THIS TO COURT, IS ALOT MORE
THEN A LITTLE $4, AND I AM ON A FIXED INCOME, SO DON'T GIVE ME THE FIXED
INCOME STORY, JUST PAY YOUR BILL , AND LEAVE CITY HALL ALONE, THE
RECEPTIONIST THAT YOU WILL SPEAKING WITH DID NOT CREATE THIS TAX, AND
DOES NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH A GRANKY MAN OVER $2

I'm surprised you people are still giving him the attention he is craving so

I live in Montgomery County. There seems to be more outrage in these
newsgroups than there is here. Of course I would rather not pay the $2
a month tax, but I am not outraged about it. I don't think any council
members will lose their jobs over it either. This is an area that
demands government services and expects to be taxed to pay for them.
