Re: what do you think of Nextel?

Nextel, in my opinion, is the best you can get in the real world.

I've been using them for over two years and I have never had a problem. =
They have great phone and support service, basically never get dropped =
calls and perfect coverage(in my area), customer service is well =
trained, intelligent, knowledgeable, friendly and sometimes witty, they =
even support any questions you have about the phones features, software, =
hardware and services. They have competitive pricing plans with plans =
that exceed others with free incoming calls or free incoming and =
outgoing plans, great PTT service (again, free) and one second rounding. =
What more can you ask for? Actually, minute rollover comes to mind, but =
    that's about it...

Perhaps I've just been lucky, or maybe it's just good in my area or =
maybe things will change for the worse in the future, I don't know. What =
I do know is, today, I love them, and I wouldn't change for anything
    ..

Great Company that has spent this year focusing on their cusotmer
service. They do have their problems, but I think they are much fewer
and farther between than they used to be.

The deals you can get really depend on what you are looking for. If you
want a very small phone (which tend to be pretty fragile) with all kinds
of bells and whistles, then they are probably not for you. Most of
their phones are bigger than the competition's, but they are much more
rugged (I've bounced my i90c off the pavement four or five times and
only have a little scratch to show for it).

The price plans sometimes appear to be higher than other's, but I
believe they are still the only provider to offer free incoming on some
of their plans. In addition, they offer Direct Connect minutes in
almost every price plan they offer (many have unlimited Direct Connect
minutes) Coverage continues to improve, and they are working with a few
other companies to expand the netwrok even further.

Re: what do you think of Nextel?

If you need multiple phones for the family, direct connect is fantastic.
    However...
My previous carrier was Unicel. I had two phones, had 500 minutes
/anytime and unlimited n/w with free long distance (in home area,
basically NH/Maine) and it was $45/month.

Now I'm getting 800 minutes, wireless web, VM, Caller ID, free long
distance anywhere and it's $114/month. The two phones share two plans
here. Biggest issue with me is coverage -- specifically they don't cover
White Mountains of NH but that's my only beef. I don't go up there that
often but when I do, it really annoys me.

I love the wireless web (and no per minute charges) and Direct Connect.
Their web tools are fantastic. You'll very rarely find deals. I got $50
off my i90 phone, I'm still waiting for the rebate. That was in June.

Overall, I'm happy, I knew what I was getting into. I hope that
portability will turn down the monthly charges but I doubt it.

Your right.. I had sprint PCS for years and the quality got bad in my
area.. dropped calls and all. plus I was going over my minutes.. now
with nextel I have FREE INCOMMING CALLS, unlimited direct connect..
always on internet (not like other carriers where it is actually
dialing up so you cant receive a call while on the internet), and 700
anytime minutes.. I pay like $80 a month..

Re: what do you think of Nextel?

Am I going to be the only voice of dissent here? The replies to this
message and others in the alt.cellular heiarchy just go to prove that
a lot of your satisfaction with your cellular company has a lot to do
    with location.

I hate Nextel. I want to throw my phone out the window on a daily
basis. I live in east central Alabama in a relatively rural area and
commute to Birmingham, AL daily. My phone (i90c) works fine here
most of the time, but I get dropped coverage even in the city! On
the commute in, I know that there are places that I can't even use the
service. And once I get home, there's no hope of service within 5
miles north and over 30 miles south. I volunteer as an EMT also, and
my phone is useless in my coverage area.

But the clencher is this: I had to make an emergency run to Tifton,
GA last week. I looked on the web site to see if Nextel provided
coverage there - the map said that it did. I knew that there would
be lots of dead area on the drive, but thought that it would work once
I got there and needed it. I got there, had a full signal, and the
phone said "ready". Couldn't make a call no matter what I did. And
I <really> needed it. As usual, Nextel let me down when I needed it
    most.

To top it all off, I use my phone appoximately 500 minutes a month,
and my wife uses hers approximately 300 minutes a month. For this
plus direct connect, we pay $120 each month!!! I tried to look at
other rate plans, but the best the CS could do was lower it $10 a
month. And don't get me started on their CS. I've had billing
problems with them from day one.

The main reason I bought Nextel Service was because I was led to
believe that they were about to acquire Southern LINC (over 2 years
ago). Now I find out that Southern LINC is about to go out of
business and would rather use their equipment for scrap iron than let
Nextel buy it because of the way Nextel backed out of the deal back
then. I'm looking at Sprint and AT&T right now, trying to figure out
ANY way to get better coverage. I did a demo of Sprint PCS this past
weekend, and it's got coverage in my area vastly superior to ANYTHING
    I've ever seen.

If substandard service is important to you, Sprint leads the pack in that
