Okay, question: Who is considered a subscriber who is
considering switching? I mean if I look at another phone
and think: Hmm... that's interesting looking phone. And then
I look at the pricing for their plans, am I grouped in with
    those who are considering switching?

Anyway, taking this...nebolous group... of people who
are considering switching: We've got 2/3rds of them
looking at Verizon. So, right off the bat, 1/3 are not eve
considering Verizon when shopping for new plans/phones.
That's not really a good thing. That's like saying when a
person goes car shopping they completely ignore Ford.
Don't look at pricing, options, models, equipement...nothing.
They've automatically ruled out on company before they
even look at them at all.

Next, only 1/3 of the group that's even looking at Verizon
is looking because of PTT. That's 1/3 of 2/3 of those who
are looking to switch from Nextel. That works out to be
22%. So not even a *quarter* of those looking to switch
from Nextel are looking at Verizon for their PTT feature.

Furthermore, we don't even know how many of those 22%
even might end up switching! Assuming half of those who
consider it actually switch (I think that might be an over
estimation, but let's roll with it). That means of all the
people who are considering switching from Nextel, only
a touch over 10% are switching to Verizon's PTT. That
figure means that almost 90% of people would rather
switch to NO PTT than switching to Verizon's PTT. That is
not, in my opinion, a ringing (pardon the pun) endorsement.

I switched. I tried Verizon first. I could not stand it after 5 days
and returned the Verizon PTT stuff, and went right to Nextel. I have
    been very happy with Nextel.

    who needs ptt anyway?

Why do you want to turn a cell phone into a walkie talkie?

Is it for Direct Connect? Gee.. with my humble 720c I press and hold 1 and
it dials my house...2 and it dials my wife's mobile...
    What's so hard with that?

Also: do you want both sides of your conversation heard in the restaurant?
Just listening to all you prattle on to look self-important..

That being said, I have a little "dongle" that plugs into the bottom of my
phone, turning it into a duplex speakerphone on demand.

Try talking to ten people at once with your cute little speed dial.

Gee- maybe I'd turn the speakerphone off.

Keep in mind that Nextel runs under a Motorola-developed protocol called
"iDEN" (The Integrated Digital Enhanced Network), which is a
foundation of 6 Cell Phone Protocols in one, providing Nextel's
Tried-and-True Direct Connect, a blend of 6 Cell Phone Protocols in one
account, Nextel's Always-On Web (if you have to ask me, it's pretty much
the Cell Phone Equivalent to Comcast Cable's Always-On Cable Internet),
and Nextel Instant Messaging Services (which I really don't have use
for, but Nextel's web and Direct Connect I would find useful, since I
have a Nextel iDEN Phone with me).

Verizon runs under CDMA 1xRTT, and quite possibly WCDMA 1xRTT. It's the
protocols that determine the instancy of Push-To-Talk times.

Sprint runs under CDMA and High-Speed PCS, and AT&T runs under GSM and
GPRS. The only way competitors can catch up with Nextel, is in
practice, establish an iDEN relationship with Motorola to deploy iDEN.
Not too many telecoms are willing to take the switch from
    CDMA/TDMA/GSM/GPRS/PCS to iDEN.

So as far as Walkie-Talkie-esque communication is concerned, nothing is
    better than iDEN.

I agree. I don't get this fascination with PTT, which was the
technology people were FORCED to use BEFORE the development of full-
duplex cell phones. I can see it for certain businesses or government
entities, of course, which is where it appears that Verizon is targeting
