I've searched around for sites that offer free ringtones in
the United States but either the tones aren't free or they
can't be sent to US phones.

Does anyone know of a site or service that allows you to
DL ringtones for *free* and is available in the states?

    thnx,
    Christoph

Unfortunately, the copyright laws in the US are much more stringent, some
would say, much more enforced and adhered to...

So all the US networks block the sending of ringtones and most won't let you
    downlaod them via WAP.

But try my site at WAP site at http://wap.ring-tones.us/
and see if you can download polyphonics. And if you have a composer on your
phone (which you probably don't) I have those on my main site as well

polyphonic at http://wap.nextones.com (obviously via WAP). Not that
many freebies available, but works for sure.

You can check out our site...
We have around 750 ringtones but growing fast. Mostly poly and voice
ringers, downloadable via wap. We give you a static URL and you can
store up to 25 ringtones and access the URL anytime via your cell phone
to download and use the ringtones in your list. We also have a voice
ringer creation tool where you can upload any wav's and it will convert
to the correct format for Sprint PCS and Nokia/Other phones (it uses the
qcp and amr or wav formats). It's all 100% free.
Let us know what you think.
