I am trying to use the Sound Converter in Nokia Suite 5. When I try and
update the midi file to the phone I get "Failed to update the ringing tone
to the phone". I know I have a good connection because I can edit the
phone's address book and also upload images. But I can't send sounds. Any
ideas what is wrong?
My phone is a 3589i. At first I thought it was the size of the file but I
tried a fairly small file with no luck.

I would check you have a folder entitled "tones". I renamed this file and
found I couldn't upload tones.
If not that then check its a valid "converted"poly and your not trying to
upload a full on midi file.
If not then sorry I'm out of ideas

You'll probably need to get MobileMB. Verizon disable this feature with PC suite to make you pay using the Get It Now.
