Data transferring: PalmVx + Nokia cell phone?

Hi,

I want to be able to transfer data wireless from Palm to PC and vice
versa.
I have:
1. PalmVx handheld
2. PalmModem
3. Nokia 5110 cellphone

As for now, I can successfully establish connection through the
telephone line using my PalmVx and PalmModem, and I can, for example,
sync my Palm content with the PC using Palm's standard HotSync soft on
both sides.

What I want is to avoid using telephone line (at least at Palm side)
and use a cellphone instead.(Or even go further and use a cellphone on
the PC side as well, but let's concentrate on the Palm side).

I'd like to separate may question into following two parts:

1. (User's point of view).

How do I connect Palm with a cellphone?
Do I need that PalmModem or can I connect the phone directly to the
Palm?
(I know that PalmModem has special connector to be used with a
cellphone, but I have no idea of how it all works).
What kind of cable do I need to connect Palm or, (if I still have to
use PalmModem), to connect this modem
to Nokia 5110? Finally, what kind of software do I need to be able to
transfer data to PC with this setup?

2. (Developer's point of view).

What is the spec for that damn 'cellphone connector' on PalmModem
(couldn't find this neither in Palm related resources, nor in
cellphones ones)? If I really need to use that PalmModem, is its
purpose to translate AT commands at Palm side to FBUS commands at
phone side or what? As far as I know, different phones use different
communication protocols, so how come
Palm Modem knows how to communicate with all those phones?
What is the pin-to-pin cable description?
Can I connect Palm to Nokia5110 directly ( Palm Tx >>> Nokia FBUS Rx;
Palm Rx >>> Nokia FBUS Tx) to be able to send data (provided Palm has
the right soft in it)?
Assuming I know how to write conduits for Palm, well, let's say I know
how to write soft (on both sides Palm and PC) to communicate through a
serial Palm - PC connection, what do I need for writing my proprietary
soft to transfer data through Palm - (PalmModem?) - Nokia - PC modem
connection?

By the way, do I have to use what is called 'Data Calls', and do I
need special service provider for transferring data?

So use infra-red. Put an IrDA port on your PC if it doesnt have one.

Why the cellphone? Remote?

Best to get a phone with infra-red port and modem emulation.
You could use a serial cable with the 5110, but it needs special
(expensive or pirated) software on the palm, as the 5110 does
not do modem emulation. (ie Hayes 'AT' commands)

The answer is complex. Many options.

Your best bet would be to upgrade your outdated Palm and Mobile. A minimum
requirement is to have a phone with Infra-red capabilities but I'd recommend
getting yourself a phone with Bluetooth if you can afford it (eg Sony
Ericsson T610) and get a PDA with Bluetooth (eg Palm Tungsten) - I use this
combination and it works a charm. Can search the net or check my email on my
Palm and not even touch my phone - have it in my pocket or bag. But as I
said if that's all beyond your means at the least you should get an IR
capable phone - should be able to pick up a second hand Nokia 8210 or 8250
fairly cheap nowadays, which should work okay with your current Palm - try
ebay.

questions.
As I can see now, what I need is a GSM Upgrade Kit (Modem Utility
actually) that makes possible to arrange Palm - PalmModem - Nokia5110
connection. Unfortunately it seems to be hard to get nowadays.

Now you should have enough keywords to google some more info.

Why would you want that? The 'PalmModem' is meant for land-lines.
A palm should talk directly to a cellphone. Easier to buy an older
phone with built-in IrDA, or use a serial cable.
I have a spare DI-27 modem, which is a small attachment for older
4V Ericsson phones (768/788/T18/etc) which would do the job.
Forget the 5110. I've used it for data calls from a PC, but it
needs special software, such as gnokii on Linux.

Will the 9600bps of data calls be enough to sync your palm
at reasonable cost?

or upload your palm data to simstore and then synch over sms

As I can figure from www.palmone.com/us/support/helpnotes/gsmfaq.html
PalmV Modem + Nokia5110 will get me the same functionality as PalmV
Modem used with
land line. For example, I will be able to HotSync just the same way I
do it now with the modem itself (using the same standard Palm
software). I dont quite understand your point, why Ericsson with DI-27
modem could be better solution?
BTW, PalmV Modem is assumed to work at 33.6k (may be not in mobile
setup though), and I can still connect my PalmV Modem to Ericsson
768/788 using the same 'GPS Upgrade Kit'.

As gsmfaq (link above) states, GPS Upgrade Kit consists of a cable to
connect PalmV Modem to a mobile phone and a so-called Modem Utility
program that will
update firmware in the modem to work with any particular phone.

I think I have to better explain myself here. I am not in such a need
of wireless Internet and such, (at least I'd like to avoid any
investments here). I view all this as a basis for possible electronics
and programming project. My real intention is to practice in writing
*my own* communication software for Palm and PC, but to start this I
need to settle on some hardware setup and my inclination on using what
I already have seems quite logical to me.

But much slower. The 5110 will only do CSD at 9600 bps.
I dont know why the kit needs the modem. With a cable and software,
you could connect the Palm directly to the phone.
Do they still sell them though? I couldn't find it.

Better than mucking about with 2 cables, a null modem adaptor and warez
sites But if you can get that kit at a reasonable price, then great.

A GSM phone with IrDA and modem emulation (e.g. an old Ericsson with
DI27) will avoid the need for cables and extra software. Simpler.

With a GPRS phone, you could be faster.

GPS?? You mean gsm? Not the same kit as for Nokia though.

{ Anyways, DI-27 for sale, $25 if anyone wants it. Adds IR
to old Ericsson, for use with Palm or laptop. }
