Couldn't make calls from my 8310. Then noticed a bold number 2 on the
standby screen in the top left corner, adjacent to the signal strength
meter.
Went to 'restore factory settings', then everything was ok.
What was this '2', and how did it get there?

Somehow u inadvertantly activated the second line in ur phone, so whenever u tried to make a call, the phone would try to access ur second line (which was empty) and could not make calls. When u reset to factory settings, the phone restored ur first (primary) line and ur problem was solved.

Line 2 was active .. hold # at the main screen for a few seconds and it will
switch between line 1 and 2
