Isn't that what voicemail is for?

I don't know any smartphone that comes with pre-installed with an internal
answering machine function, but there are quite many available for the
    Series 60 and UIQ platforms.

So therefore compatible devices are Series 60 phones: Nokia
    3650/3660/6600/7650/N-Gage and Siemens SX1

And if you want a touch screen based device, there are for example the Sony
    Ericsson P800/P900.

    Example applications: http://my-symbian.com/main/index.php?s=answering

I personally prefer the Answering Machine for Series 60 application with my
    Nokia 3650: http://www.iolansoftware.fi/am.html . It costs US$9,95 in
    Handango.

Since the post went to a bunch of groups, I'm not sure where you replied
from, but Voicemail is free (no monthly charge) on Verizon.

On cellular, it's included. Also on cellular, if a call goes to
voicemail it's usually because the phone never rang. Whether because
of being in s poor service area or because the phone was off is
immaterial... the call never got to he phone, so an in-phone answering
machine is useless (to me, anyway).

Landline, yeah, I have my own answering machine that is always left on.
If it rings long enough for the answering machine to get it, I'm not
home, and I forgot to set the call-forwarding to my cellular.

Voicemail is an included feature with Verizon Wireless.

Do you know of any answering machine programs for the P800/P900? I'm
fairly certain that none exist, and that as a developer there is no
way to get at the audio of a phone call. SonyEricsson certaintly
thinks that you can't do that.

The best quality and feature-rich answering machine system contained
within the cell phone itself doesn't mean **** if the phone never gets
    the call.

If you're willing to take that risk, that is your look-out. I'm not.
