I reckon most people who would like to change the IMEI number have an
illegal reason for doing so, but others on the other hand have a legit
reason......
Not everyone is a crook.
I have owned many mobile phones and never stolen one, I have paid for every
single one of them, but would still like to know how to change the IMEI
number. I have no reason to do so, but you can never know too much.
I think it is a legit question thats all.

What is a legitimate reason to change an IMEI number..? I can't think of
one.

I can think of several, but the point here is that in the UK (and many other
countries) it is illegal. It's also illegal to supply equipment or software
if you know or suspect that it will be used to tamper with the IMEI.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but doesn't anyone else find it strange
that you can potentially receive five years in prison and an unlimited fine
for tampering with equipment you own, and considerably less for crimes of
violence?
Ho-hum.

Re: Changing IMEI
haha, well said......if I own the phone, I ought to be able to play around
with it how I see fit.
I mean, how do we know it can be done in the first place ? why is it illegal
????? I can understand the act of stealing a phone isillegal, but is peeling
off the sticker on the back of your pc and placing a different barcode an
arrestable offence ?? surely if there is no harm being done and no crimes
being committed.....whats the problem ?

Bit of a dubious point, but I do see where you're coming from.

Because much of the flashing equipment available for the last several years
has the ability to do it.
> why is it illegal

Because the UK government reacted to phone theft in the wrong way, much like
any other law rushed through to compensate for up-to-date technology. The
law is in essence a good one, but the issues surrounding phone theft and the
investigation and sentancing of offenders for the initial theft should have
taken priority over a knee jerk reaction.

Regardless, whilst I can see your points, it IS an offence in the UK to
tamper with the IMEI of any mobile phone, or to sell equipment capable of
tampering with it if you know that it will be used for that purpose. Right
or wrong, that's the way it is.
