I have a 3589i from Verizon (USA, cdma I think - not fluent with all
these acronyms). I bought a DKU-5 cable which Linux told me was based
    on PL2303 USB.

gnokii fails to connect to the phone, usually complaining about
    "GSM/FBUS" failure.

Is anyone out there successfully using gnokii with 3589i? If so, I'd
    appreciate some useful hints.

I also tried using Nokia PC Suite 5.[something], but the download page
says it won't work with 3589i. Duh...

Google groups search of this newsgroup hints that MobiMB or Oxygen
should work with 3589i. Does that include a Verizon 3589i?

In other words, is it something in the phone itself, or PC Suite
    software, that refuses to connect?

Except for 1 ringtone, the only thing I'm interested is importing a
CSV file of my phone numbers to the phone.

    Much obliged, Bob

I found that the problem was the USB cable was talking to the wrong com port
I downloaded another program to get it to look at com port 6. I don't have
    that info
in front of me at the moment.
You can use nokia's suite to back up, load, and edit your address book.
    The stuff
you cant do is upload ring tones or graphics. This is an agreement they have
    with
Verizon so it does not compete with their "get it now" service. I understand
that Oxygen works fine for all aspects of using that cable, but I am not
    willing
to spend more on the software then I spent on the phone.

    best of luck

    Apparently not cdma 358x phones & non-Nokia DKU-5 cables.

I finally got to talk to a Nokia techie who told me 358xi series all
show "Enhancement not Supported" when using a non-Nokia DKU-5 cable.
Not knowing there is such a distinction, I ended up with a
PL2303-based DKU-5 clone cable that's less of a clone than it needs to
    be.

Even with a Nokia DKU-5 cable, "...file format & application
upload..." is not supported. Meaning ringtones & images & programs.
Has something to do with CDMA & "groove" [if I heard him correctly].

I do want at most 1 ringtone - not worth Verizon's stupid Get It Now
crapola to me. Otherwise, all I want is phonebook from my PC. So,
    maybe there is hope.
