Hello,
I've a SigmaTel IrDA. Previously, it has been working. I've recently found
out from the manual on the CD that I should not have inserted the dongle
before having run the setup, I tried to think how I can restart from
scratch.
I've tried uninstalling it without success. So I removed the IrDA from the
device manager by clicking on Remove. After restart, it was indeed removed.
I then tried to reinstall it. However, the setup kept on asking if I wanted
to uninstall. I clicked yes, and it stopped at 8%. I pressed ctrl-alt-del
and there's a programme Ikernel that's trying to run. I stopped it.
Anyway, afterwards, I just plugged the IrDA in at let win98se detect the
IrDA. Then I finally got back the IrDA icon on my tray. However, it does not
appear back on the device manager. (I am actually using samsung SCH-S500 and
have a programme from samsung to link to my cell phone.) The samsung
programme also is not aware of the IrDA and I could not connect to my cell
phone. (I am stupid to the extreme degreee! Tampering something that
worked!!!!!!)
So I think I need to get the IrDA back on the Device Manager. How? I've
already the IrDA icon on the system tray.
Hope someone can help me.

Re: IrDA device disappear from device manager
Presuming you are using Win98se and you have either all the Win98 cab
files copied onto your hard drive (usually under
C:\windows\options\cabs) or have the Win98 CD. Do not proceed unless
this is the case --
1. Boot up in safe mode (as you boot, tap on <F8>, select <safe mode>.
2. In safe mode, bring up the device manager -- right click on <My
Computer>, go down to <Properties> and left click on <Properties>. and
click on <Device Manager>.
3. Remove (Uninstall) ALL USB devices, one at a time.
4. Go into <Contriol Panel> and uninstall the program that came with
the dongle.
5. With the Dongle unattached, reboot the system.
6. Install the Application from the CD - do not plug the dongle in
until you are prompted to do so.
These instructions are generic for the removal of and installation of
drivers.
Good luck.

Re: IrDA device disappear from device manager
Now that I've made a mess of my PC, I want to ask more before doing anything
rash again.
So AJ, do you mean in my case that I remove the IrDA device from the device
manager? Or you do mean that I have to remove ALL USB devices? There is a
listing for USB controller card. You don't mean that I should remove
anything under it, right?
Another question is, do you know what the difference is, in terms of
functionality, between installing the SigmaTel IrDA adapter using the proper
way of running the setup from the CD before plugging in the dongle, and
installing it the foolish way like me by having plugged it to my PC and
letting win98se ask me where certain files are?
Question #3, if there are indeed differences, is there any way to update the
files without removing the device and installing it again? It causes a lot
of headache and anxiety to me now that I can connect to my cell phone again
(I've forced the device to appear again on the device manager by running the
Add Hardware Wizard under Control Panel).
Question #4, for my SigmaTel IrDA adatper, how can I tell which model I've
got? I've found 3 different models in the CD: Infineon, Vishay6101E and
Vishay6102F. The packaging was thrown away a long time ago and I actually
don't think there's anything on the packaging that tells me which model it
is. It even doesn't tell me it's Bf-120. I have to go to the Bafo website to
find it out.
Thanks in advance.

You remove all the USB devices. Just a quick explanation -- when your
system boots up, the BIOS as part of the boot sequence will enumerate
all the devices that are attached to the PC. It then passes this list
to the operating system, in your case Windows 98se, and the OS
compares that list to its own. Anything that is not on its list will
bring up the message "Found new Hardware" and "Installing new
hardware". Unlike WindowsXP, Win98 does not have IrDA support built
in, so the necessary hardware drivers (that interface between the
hardware and the OS) have to be installed. However, simply plugging in
the dongle first will not provide the proper setup, which is why the
instruction is to first install the software and only plug the new
hardware in once the install program prompts you to. To do otherwise
will cause the install to partially fail - just enough that it won't
work right.
So, you have to remove the devices so that drivers can get the first
install and then after enumeration, the complete install.
Corrupt drivers were more common with Win9X than with Win2K/XP,
because the latter OS has a hardware abstract layer that prevents
common applications from making direct calls to the hardware.
Unless you remove the corrupt drivers totally, you will not be able to
resolve the issue. Thus, you have your choice of removing them one at
a time through the device manager, or removing the USB key in the
registry using regedit - the key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\USB. Since
playing with the registry is like doing brain surgery, it is suggested
that you remove the USB in device manager. However, to do this
properly, you should be in "Safe Mode".

See above - an incorrect install will likely produce corrupt drivers.

Live with the anxiety. You can always take the problem to a tech and
pay him to do this for you. (I've made good money fixing up systems).

Probably the SigmaTel 4000 would be your best bet.

Re: IrDA device disappear from device manager
Hello aj,
I've followed your instruction to remove the IrDA device through Device
Manager under Safe Mode. As I've also I think by mistake installed the
Infrared PnP Network Adapter Card and there's also another SigmaTel entry
under Network Adatper, I've removed them too. After removing the IrDA under
Infrared Device, Win98SE did not ask me to restart. However, after I've
removed the Infrared Network PnP Adapter Card, there was some update of the
file from the Win98SE cabs and it asked me to restart the computer. I
clicked no, then removed also the SigmaTel entry under Network Card. It
again updated its file from the cabs and asked me to restart the computer. I
then let it restart and get into normal mode.
I then checked the device manager and there was no Infrared device and not
anything related to infrared under the network adapter.
Then I rebooted and got back into Safe Mode. I went to Control Panel and
Add/Remove Program. I clicked on SigmaTel IrDA Adapter and let it start
uninstallation. However, it again stopped at 8%. I waited for around 8
minutes. Then my patience ran out and I pressed ctrl-alt-del. I ended the
uninstallation wizard. I tried to click cancel to dismiss the Add/Remove
Program dialog. It's sort of locked up and I pressed ctrl-alt-del again.
There I saw Ikernal (no response). I selected it and ended it. Then there's
this dialog box coming up:
Title: SigmaTel USB-IR Adapter
Message: Setup failed to run installation: Remote procedure call fails
This actually came up every time I tried to uninstall the thing, though all
those times were under Normal Mode. (I have never thought that I should've
done this under Safe Mode, though it should've been obvious.) Although I
haven't tried this time yet, when I tried to run the setup again from the CD
during all those previous scrambles, the setup program would still ask me if
I wanted to uninstall the thing, rather than starting with the installation,
which was what I wanted.
So what should I do to completely remove all traces of the IrDA before I can
install it the proper way? If I need to use regedit, please tell me the
procedures.
Thanks for your continuous attention aj.
