How would you like to stop paying your landline phone company and use
your cell phones minutes on your home cordless or wired phone? Well you
can this CellSocket 5161N connects your cellular phone to your home
phone and allows you to receive and make calls from your cell phone.
Keep your cell phone in a location where it gets the best reception and
help limit potential radiation exposure.
Imagine getting rid of your "home" phone bill or use it as an extension
so that you can use up all your minutes.

Yeah, imagine trying to call 911 after the cell system goes tits up from
a weather disaster.

Life's a crapshoot. For over 99.9999999% of Man's ascent from the
primordial ooze, we managed without telephony. For over 99.999% of
the time telephones have existed, we didn't have 911.
Personally, if there's a disaster big enough to knock out cell service
in my area, I suspect local emergency services will be so overwhelmed
that 911 will do me little good anyway! ;-)
I got rid of my landline at a previous home to cut costs (we had an
expensive rural telephone company.) and used a cellsocket-like device.
It worked fine. I have wired service presently for the sound quality
and convenience- not the fear that I may need reliable 911 service.

Please quote the odds on the entire cellular system going down as you
describe. Has it ever happened..? Were the landlines working, and did the
emergency services cope with the huge number of calls they must have
received..?
The Cell Socket device has its uses, although I have no requirement for
one, I can see that some might.
Oh BTW, 911 doesn't work here in the UK anyway, and despite our claim to
foul weather most of the time, we've never had anything knock out all
communications..!

The Northeast Blackout did it.

Did what..? Elaborate please - were landlines available and did the
emergency services handle all the calls..?

Depends where you were and at what time. It's a Stateside thing.

No "depends" about it - answer the questions:
1. Were landlines available in the area of this blackout you mention..? If
not, in what percentage of the area affected..?
2. Were mobiles available..? If not, in what percentage of the area..?
3. Did the emergency services cope with the volume of calls..? If not, how
many injuries/deaths or whatever can be directly attributed to not having
a landline available..?

Thought so, you have no idea what you are talking about. Answer the
questions or shut up.

Telling me to use Google is not answering my questions. I say again, put
up or shut up, I'm getting bored.

The cellular system is only "cellular" until it hits the nearest tower. Then it
is carried on a Bell landline (T1) on the same copper cable as your home phone
uses. If a car hits the telephone cable pole or a digger hits an underground
cable feeding that tower, every carrier on that tower will go down. Most of the
time, other nearby towers will pick up the traffic but sometimes not.

Cell sites depend on electricity. If it goes out so do they unless they are one
of the very few I have seen that have generators on site. Your landline phone
may or may not be affected by a power loss depending on whether you are working
from the Bell Central Office or off a remote cabinet. The remote cabinet (which
converts your call from copper to fiber) will die within a few hours after the
power fails because the batteries will only hold it up for that long.

The cells fried. Everyone was trying to call or get called. I seem to
recall landlines were just as swamped. It was about 5 hours before my
cell could get called without massive redials.
