Is there a limit to file sizes/bitrates when storing/playing back MP3's.
Also can you use any MP3 for ringtone AND text message alert tone?

Only the size of the MM card is your limit.

If you move from the card to the phone, then it works.

It works for me even if the MP3 is on the card. There are some issues with
using MP3 or AAC files as ringtones, however. For example, the ascending
volume option doesn't work, and the silent option doesn't work if such a
ringtone is assigned to a caller group and someone from that group calls you
while the phone is in the silent profile; it will play the file anyway.
