Best way to access email over GPRS

Hi,

Can anyone suggest a way that I can access my email (POP3) from my mobile. I
am with Virgin Mobile (stop giggling at the back! I have my reasons -
mostly, Cheap!). They say they don't support POP3 access over their GPRS
service.
Does anyone know if there is any way round this, or could recommend some
other way? (eg, I know their are WAP sites that let you pick up POP3 mail,
good ones?) I would prefer to use the email client on my phone (6230) but I
realise that this may well not be possible.

Have you tried www.mail2web.com ??

I am SURE that it may be used on a handset (primarily for internet remote
access of pop3 accounts), and they have a wap page, for access.

Try it, and see how you get on

I am just trialling a 6230 myself, and the one thing I miss (that my 6600
has) is the ability to use pop3 over GPRS.

With Vodafone, mail can be collected, but not able to see attachments (which
CAN be done with my 6600), and the collection of mail is done through dial
up, as opposed to GPRS.

I collect Vodafone pop3 mail with a 6230 using GPRS no problem - don't know
about attachments I don't need them on my phone.

Don't know about Virgin Email ;-)

But VirginMobile is cheap for me. Don't use my phone much. Average monthly
spend is probably less than a tenner. My wife has had a VirginMobile phone
for some time, so it only costs me 3p to send her a text now.
15p a minute for first 5 then 5p a minute thereafter seems quite good to me.
Only drawback is Xnetwork calls are quite dear, but then I don't make many
of them anyway.

What would you recommend, considering my very low usage. Any alternative
would have to be under £10 a month all in for it to be cheaper than what I
spend now...

If Virgin mean what they say about not supporting pop over gprs, but do
support gprs wap, then you'd probably be best just checking the email
via wap. The biggest advantage of pop3 email on a phone is that you can
read the email while offline or out of coverage- can't do much about the
latter, but the cost savings of the former aren't really a big deal as
you only pay for the data you use, not the amount of time spent reading
email, which was the case with dial-up wap. I have a T610 on orange, so
I can use both pop and wap to read email, even in the US as I did a week
or so ago! However, sometimes I use pop, sometimes wap- depends. If I
don't want to download all the email to the phone, I use wap. As I have
the check email function as my toggle-left shortcut, pop's certainly the
easiest way.
