I disagree, but the cross-posting was wrong in any event, since the newsgroups
    aren't related.

I'd opt for either of the Nokias (the two you've listed are pretty
    similar) or the T68i.

I can personally vouch for the 6100 - good reception quality, long
standby time. Lacks many of the "features" of newer phones which I
consider unnecessary thus is smaller, lighter and has better battery
    life.

Perhaps not as robust as some of the older Nokias, but then few modern
phones are, but tough enough to survive your trip. I've dropped mine,
sat on and generally abused it and it's still going strong.

I WAS happy with the V600 but then the BT audio has become distorted and
unusable, the headset is fine with the T39, also I would have preffered if
there was a driver for the palm so that I can collect SMS messages on the
handheld, finally to top it all off MPT will not collect the SMS from the
    phone anymore :-(
I have reset the V600 and re-installed the software but no luck :-(

Man you think abnormally. If somebody is worrying which phone would
work well in Indian conditions while traveling there, it is normal to
include the Indian group. I would have included rec.travel.asia too.

Sour guys like you who want to control public forums are best ignored.

Not choosing one side or another, I think cross-posting is considered not
done. Normally one should post in each ng *seperately*. Then again, with the
ng's mentioned and the topic of the discussion/question, maybe in this case
crossposting could be ok. Just my 2 cents, please don't kill me for it

I'm referring to the Sony Ericsson Z600 <http://www.sonyericsson.com/z600/>,

Correct. Wide cross-posting is generally discouraged, particularly to
unrelated newsgroups. It's one thing to cross-post to

    alt.cellular.ericsson
    alt.cellular.motorola

when both product lines are specifically involved, but another thing entirely
    to throw in:

    soc.culture.indian

which has nothing to do with cellular. That participants there might have
knowledge of cellular in India doesn't make it OK -- it's still off-topic per
    the newsgroup charter.

Pros and cons of x-posting have been debated to death over many years.
What you are suggesting would spend much more bandwidth. X-posting
was invented precisely to prevent such waste.

As with many things, there is no perfect solution, we compromise based
on our priorities: (1) put up with some inconvenience and
conserve/maximize common resources, OR (2) emphasize our own
    convenience and waste common resources.

Different people choose differently and I think we should respect each
other's right to make that choice. Most people do get that much, but
every group seems to have a few sour jerks who don't.

The mirror image of John Navas would eb another cranky fellow who goes
around attacking people for *not* x-posting, for posting identical
articles to different groups and wasting bandwidth.

    > Then again, with the ng's mentioned and the topic of the
    > discussion/question, maybe in this case crossposting could be ok.

That is correct and it is good of you to acknowledge it.

It is good to remember the fundamentals: If you haven't paid for it and
don't own it, don't try to control it. Unless people have elected you
to guide them, don't interfere with their choice; just make your own
    choice freely.

    > Just my 2 cents

Mine too, and I may not have any more cents to contribute.

I see, I did wait eagerly for the Z600 and was sorely dissapointed by the
thickness of the unit compared to the T39 and the plastic look, shame really
as otherwise I would be not considering another unit after just 6 months

Cute debating trick. Cross-posting is also "generally employed".

As I said earlier, you do think abnormally.

More deeply, we have different ecological priorities: You are one of
those who want to maximize their own convenience; I am one of those who
want minimize the waste of common resources (cyber bandwidth in this
    case).

No problem, unless and until one wishes to impose his choice on all.

It irrelevant. Usenet is "governed" by the news admins that operate it, and
proper conduct is *****ed out in Usenet guidelines. Read and respect them.

I have known Usent for twenty years, including as news admin a few
times. The point is not whether there are any rules and guidelines, but
whether Mr Navas is stating and interpreting them correctly. He is not.

He is telling us that if somebody had a question about Japanese cinema,
it is forbidden to xpost it to both Japan- and cinema-related groups.
That is beyond being somehow wrong, it is the exact opposite of how
usenet is supposed to function. X-posting was invented precisely for
    such purposes.
