    In which case it's probably not connected to any of the networks yet.
    Try a working SIM from another phone or buy a PAYG SIM.

    'contact service' actually means the phone itself is broken.

    If the SIM wasn't registered or was invalid, you'd get a different error,
    'Unregistered SIM', 'SIM registration failed', or it would just not find
    an active network.

    I did once get this message on my 8310 after swapping SIMs. The
    normal message if the handset is locked is "Phone restricted".
