Very much depending on which country you are in. This is not a UK
newsgroup - changing them IMEI is perfectly legal in most countries.

But the OP was posting from a UK ISP address.

I am from Austria - and I didn't know it is illegal to change the IMEI
anywhere. I do not know why it is illegal in the UK, can anyone
    explain it to me?

Because there is little *legitimate* reason for doing so.

The only likely reason for changing the IMEI is if it's been
blacklisted. All UK providers subscribe to a scheme intended to
reduce mobile phone theft so any phone blacklisted in the UK is
unusable on ALL networks. This scheme is effective, and can only be
so, because IMEI changing is a criminal offence in the UK.

It's simple. The only reason you'd need to change your IMEI number is if
your phone has been reported as stolen and is hence blocked by the service
    providers.

Or to put it another way, the only reason you'd need to change your IMEI
number is if you have stolen a phone and wish to use it or sell it, or are
in possession of a stolen phone. In either case, your phone is illegal.

You've already been advised it's illegal to change the IMEI but why
    would you want to?

I presume this is the same 8310 with the "contact service" message
you've already posted about in two separate threads? You've had a
number of replies to your earlier posts suggesting you contact your
service provider or attempt to unlock your handset. Have you followed
    those suggestions?

Were it blacklisted it would display "SIM card registration failed".

You cant.... The 8310 is a DCT4 handset, the IMEI is stored in OTP memory
(One Time Programmable) and NOT flash memory.

Since when? If you alter the ESN or IMEI that's illegal in just about
all countries. Whether you receive jail time for doing it is another
    matter.

Why is it so hard to understand the reason that it's illegal? You're
faking the number. You change the serial number on most anything and
the government will get on your case.
