My new Nokia 6610 came as part of a set tha included a cable to connect
to a USB port. At home I have a mac powerbook. My question is, what are
the kind of things people do with a phone-mac hook up? The only thing I
can think of is saving my contact info, and maybe downloading it to my
next phone. Does that require any special software?

I have the 6310i which has built in BlueTooth. There is a shareware
called Phone Manager which will transfer data between the Nokia and
Address Book.
I've used the BlueTooth / GSM combination to go online both in the US
and overseas.
