i bought a 5130 as working but on orange. i unlocked it so that i can use
voda. it accepts sim card ok but wont register to the network - i get no
    signal.
i hooked it up to wintesla and it told me that the reciever was set on the
wrong channel (how could it have worked before then ????? ) so i put that
right but still not registering to network.
net monitor shows that it is in contact with 5 or 6 cells and the signal
strength is well within the limits so it cannot be a faulty reciever.

anybody got any ideas whats wrong/ how to fix it ?

    TIA

    Chris

There's nothing wrong with it. The 5130 is a single band GSM 1800 handset
and as Voda works on GSM 900, it's never going to work.

the 5130 works only on gsm 1800 which is orange, t-mobile, virgin. the
5110 on the other hand is GSM 900 which is o2 & voda.

ok. i'm not questioning anybodys intelligence here - just trying to work out
    whats what :-)
in the past i have owned either 2 or 3 orange nk402's (presumed 5110 but
dont know for sure) and have unlocked them and used voda sims without a
    problem.
would i be right in thinking then that there used to be a 5110 nk402 on
orange ? i s'pose there must have been if i had them working on voda before.
i bought this 5130 presuming it would be a 5110 and would work ok :-(

Isn't the 5130 a single band 1800 Mhz phone? If you're in an area
where Voda is only 900 Mhz it wouldn't work would it?

5110 is single band GSM 900. 5130 is single band GSM 1800. The 51XX
series was probably the last or one of the last to use single bands.
Most phones after that combined both 900 and 1800. Usually the
"improved" or modified versions have an i affixed to them e.g. 6310i
    or 3510i.

It's possible that you may have been in an area where Voda have some 1800
MHz microcells, but you were lucky, they're only used to fill in areas of
    poor coverage.

    > would i be right in thinking then that there used to be a 5110 nk402 on

    No, the nk402 on Orange was a rebadged 5130 not a 5110.

Let me explain. There are two phones, the 5110 and the 5130. They both
look identical but one works on 900 MHz (5110) and the other works on 1800
    MHz (5130).

Voda and O2 (previously Cellnet) work on 900 MHz so a SIM from either of
these will work in a 5110. Orange and T-Mobile (formerly 1-2-1) work on
1800 MHz so they work with the 5130 (badged nk402 on Orange) but *not* the
other way round. As I said Voda (and maybe O2, not sure) have some 1800
microcells used to fill in blackspots, but you can't rely on them for full
    coverage.

    Ok..?

You're absolutely right, in fact thinking back I believe that the 5146 was
the one Orange badged as the 402, not the 5130 as I said before.

a 5146 was one2one, but if you unlock it, it will become a 5130
    (gsm1800)

an nk402 was orange, but again if you unlock it, it will become a 5130
    (gsm1800)

this is what i've always thought to be correct, someone correct me if
    i'm wrong!

That sounds about right. Orange went through a phase of renaming handsets
(Nokia Orange, 5.1, 402, 702 etc. or appending an e on to the end), but I
think the 5130 was the Orange version and 5146 the One2One version.
