Hi all,
I'm thinking about replacing my 6310 with a 6820, and I've got some
queries before I wander into the phone shop.
1. My main reason to upgrade is to be able to access my mail from the
device. What I need to be able to do is connect the phone, via IMAP, to
several mail servers on the internet. All the servers have a few hundred
messages on them. I want to be able to send mail and check for new mail
on a timed basis (say every 15 mins). Will the phone support this?
2. What are the costs like for this functionality, if it's available?
3. Anybody got any ideas when the thing will be available on Orange in
the UK?
Cheers,
Andy.

The 6820 is a great phone but may fall short of your requirements. You
can set up 10 email accounts and they can by IMAP or POP3. You cannot
setup the email client to poll the server on a time basis.
The email client supports up to new 50 messages. To receive more
messages, you need to delete the ones you have received to make room
for more. Deleting and scrolling messages on the phone is not bad but
it is not "fluid" if you know what I mean. Possible to do but
cumbersome.
You check for other Java email clients that you could download from
the web but I have not found any decent ones. There is only so much
you can do in 64 KB that this phone supports.
Overall, if you want a high powered email client it is better to go
with a Series 60 phone or a PDA but you will miss the ultra convenient
keyboard of the 6820.
Don't know about the costs in the UK, here it is about 2 euro per MB.

Are you sure it will read the followong messages after you delete the first
50 on the phone? I have the 6800, not the 6820, but I thought the email
program is the same. Mine will definitely not read past message 50 on the
POP server even if I delete everything on the phone.
If it will now read the next 50, I wonder if I can get a software upgrade?
Other limitations:
- No spam filter. Whan I use the 6800 to read email I realise how much spam
Outlook is filtering out for me.
- Limit on message size. Long ones are truncated.
- Attachments cannot be read (maybe all phones have this limitation?)
- Sometimes it handles HTML OK, sometimes it shows as HTML source which is
hard to read.
There are also limitations on address book size (500 entries) etc.
For serious email on a phone I would look at the 92xx, 93xx Communicators.
Big but powerful. There is a new compact model coming out soon. Or a Trio?

Is that the program size limit? Memory management is an issue with the 68xx.
I have 3MB free (for games I suppose?) but cannot use it for extra email,
contacts, notes, etc. so it sits there unused. Annoying. It could be a great
phone with better email and memory management.
(Funny thing: the early IBM 360 mainframe computers started at about 64kb
memory too!)

Yes, I find it really hard to use a regular phone now I am used to the 6800
keyboard for text.
I tried an IPAQ but found it too awkward and heavy to carry all the time.
I prefer the 6800 to the 6820 because the keyboard is bigger so easier for
my fat fingers; but it has no camera.

That's a bit rubbish. If you use IMAP, the mail is held on the server
anyway, so you only need to cache the mails as they're read.

I guess I'll have to wait. I don't want to carry anything too hefty
around. I can live without mail for now. Sounds like Nokia kind of
dropped the ball, tho. This would be a great platform for IMAP email access.

Mine does for sure. The 6820 is a much better phone. I recommend the
upgrade. Don't know about the 6800 but my firmware is 4.25.

Let's face it, serious email is very difficult to do on anything
smaller than a laptop (at least 800 x 600). If you actually observe
how people use their mobile devices, you will notice that 95% of the
traffic is sms kind of traffic even on the Blackberries.
You could technically use an iPaq for semi-serious email, mostly
because ClearType lets you fit more stuff on the screen with a smaller
but still legible font.
Good luck.
